Laptop to mike export? possible?

    i want to turn my laptop into a mike receiver where it wont record just push the mike through basically turn it into a stereo is there any application that will do this like a straight through and no time limit note this is for a band
    laptop specs
    166mhz
    98 ram
    16 bit sound card
    2gb hard drive
    note im looking for free ware

    o/s currently debian but willing to change
