laptop to tv video problem

    well i got the right cords hooked them up...i use a program called tv now..turned it on...everything comes up fine other then its really big but i can change that...but when i got to play videos on any video player the screen is black in the video space while its playing on my laptop...sound does transfer...i need help ive tried so many things and nothing has worked
