Hi guys i need an SOS. My brother has a Packard Bell Easy Note LS running Win 7 x64. Yesterday he switched off the laptop, and today the desktop doesn't come up. The taskbar comes up but is inaccessible and it's super slow. I tried to boot it in safe mode (unsuccessful), system restore (there is no restore points), memory diagnostic no errors. He has lots of important work files in it so i can't format it. I asked him if he installed anything yesterday but he said nothing except for the VLC player 2 days ago.

My money is either a software issue or a virus/malware.

Could anyone please give me a suggestion? Thanks!

@mamu1989: Some questions / things to try:

    1) Can you access the Start Menu? If so, access Control Panel, then go to Device Manager and see if anything has a yellow exclamation point by it.
    2) Though you can't see the desktop, can you access it, i.e., can you right click where it would be, and if so what menu comes up?
    3) Assuming the answer to 2) is "yes", can you click on Personalize; can you change the desktop appearance? If you can, try setting the desktop to a Basic Color scheme. Does that bring back the desktop?
    4) Can you run an antivirus scan? Do you have an antimalware app like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware? Can you run a scan using their software?
    5) After all of that, how is the computer responding?
    6) You say the Taskbar is inaccessible. What do you mean by that exactly, e.g., there are no icons where there used to be, you click on it but nothing happens, it disappears unless your mouse cursor is touching it, etc. ?
    7) Same question about not being able to boot into safe mode - what exactly happened, did you try it using the F8 key or from the start menu, etc. ?

Once you've gotten this far, how about reporting back as to your progress, and we'll keep on from that info!

    Regards,
