laptop troubles

OK back again to gain more incite. as always will post as much info as i can so i get the best advice i can
laptop: is a compaq f767nr notebook currently running vista home premium. have posted other problems with this notebook so please keep that in mind as we make decisions about where to go from here.
Problem: when i got the notebook when u close the lid with it on it would shutdown then the other day i went to turn it on and got a black screen.Did the troubleshooting stuff ruled out video card by hooking up external monitor deiced my best coarse of action was to replace the inverter. (By the way no faint images at all) while i was waiting for parts i decided to tear it all the way down and try to clean fan and heatsink due to overheating problems. (will check back about that at end of post) So parts came put everything back together and cranked it up.Got the white screen now!! did troubleshooting and decided to check all connections first. Disconnected and reconnected all cables put it all back together and now i got the black screen again.so i need advice on where to go from here so here are my options as i see it
1 put it on the self as paper wait :ie spear parts emergency pc i will work with external monitor
2 replace cables and is so what ones the lcd the one that goes to the video card or both
3 replace power board i call it that because it has the power button on it and it is a board has several cables feeding the LCD
4 replace the lcd screen
have read some stuff about motherboard but thinking if video card works motherboard is fine but could be wrong
so what do u think i should do. I have invested about $60 on parts so far don't have a dvd drive that i can get working after countless hrs and the overheating thing if i keep a fan pad on it it does ok. not sure how to check and see if fan is working and if anyone has a cracked lcd screen that will still load up willing to let me have for the cost of shipping let me know

 

When you go into "Power Settings", what is the laptop directed to do when the lid is shut?

It can Shut Down, Hibernate, or even Stand By.

Have you looked at your Power Setting Scheme?

 

it is set to just sleep notice it did more of a reboot last time i have the cover off the lid today checking connections again and it did not do anything when i closed it when i say cover i mean the front of the screen i need to look more at it will get back to u on that was really hoping to get more input on what my next move should be will check back in the morn

 

Start with the simplest solutions first.

Move on to more complex assaults as the simpler ones fail to solve the problems.

 

ok then what would be the simplest to do next and does anyone know where i can price the lcd cable google is not any help today can find the screens cable not included but no cables

 

If the connector is BLUE, with round pins, then you want VGA.

If the connector is OFF WHITE, with rectangular pins, that is DVI.

Otherwise, it may have an HDMI connection.

VGA is analong, DVI/HDMI are digital, and ARE NOT interchangeable, save for an expensive adapter box.

If you mean the ribbon cable that goes from the vid, to the LCD, normally that's a bit of an advanced repair.

ok how is it advanced repair it just disconnects from back of screen and from the vid card right thinking of getting a free estamite done then i will know excaly whats wrong and no one ever told me how i know if the fan is working am i supposed to hear it or what
