    Hello,
I have aquired an Acer Aspire 3634 WLMi Model ZL6,
Windows XP is loaded, but both user accounts are passworded, and i dont have the password. As there is a Windows XP sticker on the bottom i thought i would reload Windows, easy!
I changed the boot up to run from DVD, then pressed enter to boot from DVD, windows starts to run setup, then when you are asked the first question, the latpop turns off.
I repeated the process several times, but cannot start the install process?
Now at a loss of what to do?

It turning off like that could be overheating issues. How old is the laptop?

    Thanks for ther replies,
It is a friends laptop, I am usung my genuine XP disc ( not installed as now running Win 7), but planning on using the licence key from the sticker on the laptop.

I have taken the case apart and removed all the fluff,
the laptop was manufactured in 2005, I have also tried running setup with the bottom of the case off and a fan blowing air on it.

I ran a linux live cd ( Kbuntu) and this was fine, i ran it for an hour no problems,
My next thought was to pop the hard drive out and put it in a USB caddy i have, and format it from MY desktop PC and retry setup?
I have posted on here several times, i know not for a while, and mainly in the spyware section, I have been given the user account passwords, I am not trying to crack them
If I boot in to Windows XP SP3 the normal way as soon as i put in the user password the device also shuts down

Just a thought- have you checked in the bios for the date ?
If the date is out, then windows will often either not finish installing, or, loading (that can be a sign of a dying cmos batterry)
If the laptop is 2005, it could be XP SP2 version, and your laptop key will not work on it (nor on earlier laptops with XP SP1, originally installed)
The passwords should work if they are for the original version of XP.(albeit the laptop was eventually updated to sp3, but with sp2/sp3 updates , not from an XP sp1/or, sp2 disc, as original.
When you cleaned out fluff from inside, did you clean out from between the cpu fan, and heatsink, as that is where most fluff/cats/dogs hair, and dust get jammed solid- I have sometimes removed a 5mm to 7mm thick wad , the width if the fan housing (around 50mm long) from there. Otherwise reseating the cpu carefully on new compound has helped reduce aoverheating on many laptops .I often remove the pad that they come with and replace with artic silver ceramic heatsink compound, and have found that works well, if other cleaning failed to cure it.
I also suggest using compressed air cannisters to blow of the dust and hairs/fluf rom the motherboard, if stripping that far, bur if going to that extent, make sure the board is cold , to avoid condensation from the cold air touching the board.

    Hi all,
I have managed to get the laptop working.
When i connected to my PC, immediately i found a virus
, upon performing a full scan i removed 4 more virus and several trojans.
I have removed a lot of fluff from around the fan and heatsinks.
I was still unable to install windows XP or even windows 7 on to the PC, after reading the user manual, i found that there was a recovery partition so had it reload windows XP SP2, now just have the long task of installing the updates and adding ans easy to use anti virus and firewall.
