Laptop will not run defrag

I have a Compaq Presario2100 running XP SP2. I just tried to run defrag and the program opens but will not analyse the drive or do anything for that matter. I can look through and open the drop down menus. If I right click on c: drive and select analyse or defrag it does nothing.

I have not run this in at least a year and have no idea what could be causing this. Your assistance please. Thanks.

 

After clicking on "Disk Management" I get a message that pops up saying "the RPC server is unavailable".

 

All it says to do is to reboot. I have done that already. I am doing it again.

says windows cannot find "sfc/scannow". Make sure you typed correctly....

 

Okay, sorry I did not have the space in there. says it is verifying all protected windows files are intact and in their original versions. waiting for it to finish

 

what is 'windows file protection"?

 

it ran and then dissapeared? I am not understanding what I am supposed to do?

 

It told me that it had to run at the next reboot, so I did that and it is running now.

 

did that now what?

 

It could be the DCOMLAUNCH service:

1. Click Start > Run and type Services.msc

2. Double-click DCOM Server Process Launcher

3. Set its startup type to Automatic

4. Restart and try Disk Defragmenter.

No it would not, even after another reboot.

Matacumbie, that was a perfect fix! Thank you! I actually just told it to start, it started up and now I am running defrag without rebooting.
