    Dell - Inspiron 17.3" Laptop - 8GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive

Brand new laptop we bought our son for Christmas will not boot up.
When turned on it flashes the Dell icon then the progress bar fills instantly and everything disappears. No spin-up sounds or anything on the screen (besides the bluish lit screen).

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

It's less than a month old; computers generally have 90 days of support. Contact Dell.

    Thank you for your reply.

We bought the computer from Best Buy, so we took it in yesterday. The hard drive was completely dead, so they replaced it.

Looking at recent reviews of this particular laptop online, however, it seems that our issue is not an uncommon one.

My new questions for all you wise tech gurus:
    • Is there are reason this laptop is more susceptible to hard drive failure?
    • Is there anything we can do on our end to prevent hard drive failure?

Thanks again for all your help!

Some hard drives are just bad because a bit of hardware in it fails. Years ago IBM had millions of hard drives fail.

Not really. Look at the specs and hope that BestBuy did not put in the same brand hd with a higher than normal failure rate. If they did, monitor it closely for the next 60 days and if you notice any problems, take it back to BB and complain.

Before I buy a computer, I usually google to model to see customer satisfaction. If I note lots of complaints from owners, I scratch that model off my list.

I've owned 13 computers thus far and only had trouble with two. My first IBM had to have the hd replaced 3 times. (I wonder if I was one of those that kept getting the drive with the high failure rate?) This was before the internet so I could not search.
The other was a TigerDirect one. I was on the phone daily with support until they finally got tired of me calling and pushed me up to a level 2 tier tech support. He knew immediately what the problem was. The computer was overclocked and unstable. (I didn't overclock it; TigerDirect did). He had me make some adjustments and the computer was fine from that point on.
