Whenever I turn on my laptop (Toshiba Satellite L850D, 3 months old, Windows 7, 16GB RAM, 1TB Hard drive... [is that all the info you need in that aspect?]) it will load okay up until the log on screen. It will go from the Toshiba screen, to the "starting Windows" screen, then goes completely black, except for the fact that I can see the cursor. If I turn the laptop off and back on, it will allow me to use it in safe mode. I have googled what the issue could be, and the only advice I found was to update the drivers under "Display Adaptors" in Control Panel - When I tried to up date the drivers (named AMD Radeon HD 7660G and AMD Radeon HD7610M [if you needed that]) it told me that both drivers were already up to date.

(BTW, if someone has already asked this and it has been resolved - I apologise, my internet is playing up and refusing to load the other forum threads)

Since you can see the cursor it should not be your Display adapter drivers. If the drivers were bad you would not see the cursor.

In safe mode go to Computer, right click the C: drive and select Properties. Under the Tools tab select Error Checking-Check Now button. In the window that opens leave the first box ticked and hit the Start button. It will schedule for next boot so say OK and then reboot. After the chkdsk runs, see if it goes further into Windows.

If you have a blank CD/DVD around you may want to create a Repair Disc before running the chkdsk. That is just going to the Start menu and typing in repair and hitting enter. Then insert a blank CD and follow the prompts. (chkdsk should cause no problems but it is always good to have a repair disc available.)

I am positive I have already done a disc check several times accidentally (computer did it while trying to load, I think), but will try that way and see what happens. :)

If it has done it automatically then there may be a problem with the HD. If no change you may want to do it again with both boxes ticked. That is much more thorough and takes about an hour. Stage 4 will be the longest as it has to read the whole HD.

    try re seating the memory
if it's going through a check disk when booting to windows sometimes it might be corrupt memory not being flushed to disk properly on shutdown

if re seating the memory doesn't cure it this would suggest a bad memory module

    or
it might be a simple case of a corrupt windows installation
if possible run a windows repair to rule this out

Hard drives are incredibly fragile when they are running and the slightest shock can cause damage. Users should close the lids of their laptops and wait for the PC to sleep before moving them or treat them like the most fragile egg they ever carried.
Go get the trial version of http://www.hdtune.com 's professional; boot into safe mode, and run it.
On the Health tab, find the Reallocated Sector Count line. If the value in the Data column is anything but 0 (zero), the drive has begun to fail. If you run the Error scan (not the fast one) and even one red box shows up, you found the reason why the PC won't boot normally. Vista, 7, & 8 all love to hang when they hit a CRC error (bad sector).
You should also be warned that the drive probably has a G-Shock sensor (down near the bottom on the Health tab) and Toshiba may deny a warranty claim if it has been triggered.

The disc check wasnt done after nearly three hours, forgot to charge it and it died -- now it wont run at all in safe mode (seems to freeze while loading the drivers), and when i tried to load in the normal mode again, this came up: "interactive login process failed. Please consult the event log for more details."

I am assuming now my best bet would Be to take it to a professional as i cant even log in or start up in safe mode? We have it on a flexirent so warranty is no issue, we get replacements and uphrades when necessary.

Since it is under warranty and the chkdsk was taking so long, I think you have a bad HD. Even though the computer is new, it can include a faulty component.

Were you running with a single or both boxes ticked?

    Both were ticked.

It could have taken three hours depending on how large a HD you have in there. But that is going on the long side even with a 1TB drive. I really think you may have a faulty drive. You could try running a chkdsk from a CD if you wanted to try to fix it yourself but the original hang was probably a corrupted file and the new problem is probably a different file.
