I've got my friend's laptop (Dell Inspiron 700m). It has a Toshiba HD. She broke her screen (she dropped the laptop!)...so you cannot read anything on it, ie, no desktop visible, etc... She is wanting to get her photos off of her hard drive, since she does not have any of them on CD's. Does anyone know how we can accomplish this? I tried hooking the laptop into my desktop pc's monitor, but it only says "No signal". Hope this is in the correct forum. My problem did not seem to be "Software" related. Thanks in advance for any suggestions! :)Shanrene

You can take the hard drive out and either put in a 2.5" USB enclosure or buy an adapter that will let you hook it up to a regular PC. If the drive is ok, you should be able to transfer the files/photos.

Any computer store, but before you do that, is there an FN button or anything similar on the keyboard? I dont know the layout of dell keys, but on my laptop they are all on the F keys. I hold FN and F8 to switch displays. If you have the VGA output that button is on there somewhere.

Like mirack said, NoEgg or any of the main online stores have them. You just need to find out if you have an EIDE or SATA drive.

    Hi Shan,

When you attach an external monitor to a laptop you usually have to switch the video output from the laptop display to the external. It's usually a different color on a function key usually blue. It's may be just CRT/LCD. You have to press the function key in the same color and the switch key at the same time. Worth a try. Maybe!

    Good Luck, Jim

    hit
<Fn><F8> Switches the video image to the next display option.
The options include the integrated display, an external
    monitor, and both displays simultaneously.

    This is from Dell manual...
