My laptop is Gateway M350WVN, about 2 year old. I usually unplug my laptop when I go to sleep, and tonight, when I tried turning it on and noticed was that the front charge light didn't turn on. So I thought the battery had gone out, and I plugged it in, and the charge light turn on. I don't know what happened, but how do I fix this? Is there even an identifiable problem.:cry

    Thank you for any advice.

Does the battery still take/hold charge ?? cos it could be just the led light gone !! does laptop still boot just via battery power.
*the more you can tell us the better response to the issue*

    Hi Jeromes,

This may have nothing to do with your problem. Some, maybe all, Gateways turns the charge light off when the battery gets to 100% charge. It fools folks into thinking that the power adapter has died. Check again. Run on battery awhile and see if it comes back.

    Good Luck, Jim

With the PC plugged in, wiggle the adapter cord where it connects to the PC. If the charging indicator in the bottom taskbar of Windows goes on and off, it's a power adapter issue.

If you need a new power supply/charger, skip the overpriced OEM Gateway unit and get a good quality aftermarket one (about $50). Better brands include Cables Unlimited and Antec (check reviews on Amazon or Newegg) - just be sure to set the proper voltage (shown near or behind the battery on the PC) before using it.

    Hi again Jerome,

Thanks for the feedback. Just had another funny with the Gateway. If I remove the battery then replace it the laptop will not start - no light from the start button. Connecting the adaptor gets it going even if you just plug in the power connector to the Lappy, pull it right out and then push the start button. Hopefully this is the only one with that problem. Think of having to take the batt out, the double sized one, to get the Lappy into your carrying case and no place to plug in the adaptor when you get ready to use it.

    Luck to you, Jim

Since it sounds like you have two different batteries, does the problem happen with both batteries or just one?

If only one, the battery itself may be causing the issue. If so, contact the battery mfr. for a replacement (RMA) if the battery is still under warranty. If out of warranty, take the bad battery to a recycling bin (at the front of any Best Buy or Home Depot) and give it a proper burial.

Aftermarket notebook batteries are a lot less expensive than OEM, but they can be a crapshoot at times. When I buy aftermarket ones, I go on eBay and look for a USA seller with at least a 98.5-99% positive feedback rating from at least a few thousand buyers. Avoid sellers who ship from Hong Kong or China: It may take up to three weeks for the item to arrive and, if DOA, the cost of returning it will be astronomical.
