I have an Acer laptop computer, which connects to the internet at my house via a Belkin wireless router. We have broadband internet, and the internet works fine on both our desktop computers connected to the internet. My laptop is connected to the internet yet I cannot use the internet. If I type an IP address for any site, the site appears. Through research I have determined it must be a DNS problem. Only problem is, noone can fix it!

I have tried connecting to the internet via LAN, without the wireless as well and the same problem occurs... If anyone has any way to fix this problem help would be much appreciated!

Is the DNS Client service running and set to Automatic start up type?
Have you tried ipconfig /flushdns from the command line?

Yes to both of those questions.

Have you tried disabling the DNS Client service?
If you do an ipconfig /all from the command line on this comp and a functioning comp, are the IP address listings for DNS servers the same?

Can you list all the steps you have tried in resolving this problem?

Unfortunately, I'm not very smart with these kind of things.

    I'll give it a go.

When putting ipconfig on the main computer it doesn't show a DNS Server number that can be matched with the one found on my laptop... I'm not sure why this is... I'll try another computer on the same network line.

When trying flushdns command on my laptop I come up with a weird line about needing elevation?! I'm not quite sure what that means...

I have checked the DNS settings and all look ok, it is set to automatically connect.

I have tried resetting the wireless internet all together, disconnecting it and removing the security p/w's. That didn't work.

Umm... I've given my computer to my brother who is more technologically savvy. And he cannot fix it either.

Other than all of these things, I cannot think of any other ways in which I have tried to reset the problem....

since your desktop computer doesnt have problems resolving names, try these steps:

    on computer:
type ipconfig /all (the /all is mandatory) see the dns server ip adress(es) write them down..

    on the laptop :
type ipconfig /all (again, the /all is mandatory) , if the DNS server ip address(es) does not match the one on the computer, go to the network card and add it manually, it could be an issue with your dhcp server (or client) not setting the full settings dynamically).

if the dns server ip address(es) do match, then try the following:
    on the laptop:
    type nslookup
see what it says next to server (nslookup makes u communicate with the dns server and resolve ip addresses)
type a domain name that you know the ip for (example google.com ,or cnn.com)
i would need feedback after all these steps , let me know what happens with exact detailed answers (snapshots if possible) and i will get back to you

    Cheers

Thank-you very much for all your help. I couldn't resolve the problem so I ended up taking it to a computer technician. He couldn't solve the problem either, and didn't understand why the usual methods of solving it didn't work.

I have had to format my entire system - Going right back to the start. Although that's very annoying - it worked! My internet is now back. Let's hope it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for your help and your time.

    Cheers.
