laptop won't boot if HDD is attached...

    im working on this laptop and it'll go through post but comes up with an 'insert proper boot media in selected boot device and press a key' error aka-it doesnt recognize the hdd....sooo, i opened it up and it wasn't fully connected...just kinda sittin there, but when i connect it, the laptop won't boot. at all. no power or anything....could this be an irq/io error?
