    Hello everyone,

    Hello everyone,

I've a compaq presario laptop, which won't connect to any wired internet connections, but it does connects through wi-fi. But my other laptop like (this one I'm using to write this) works perfectly fine with the same wired connection. It happened earlier too, but a friend of mine did something and it worked, but this time he says he can't do anything because it shows 0 received in the activity section under "local area connection status". It happened all after I gave my laptop to a shop for cleaning the fan. I'm not sure if he removed something out of it (is it possible coz, it looks like some software prob to me, one more reason I'm not doubting is coz it has happened before.

I see an exclamatory sign in the network icon.

I tried several thing like ip config, updating the network driver, formatting the laptop and installing the new windows7, but nothing works.

    Hi

An exclamation mark in a yellow trinagle box usually indicates a problem with the device. This is painfully obvious to you at this time no doubt.

Updating the driver as you have mentioned is a potentially a fix, if that is the cause of the problem.

however there is another issue to be mindful of common with laptops.
The "Turn this device off to save power"

If the above isnt the cause, see if there is any information in the exclamation about the device problem, see if there is an error code etc... and google it.

There may also be an issue with the correct driver, I have encountered, on more than 1 occassion, a manual or even in device manager the incorrect deviice listed. The result i was trying to install the wrong driver for the device even tho everything looked appropriate.

You might want to try downloading "Everest" available from this site. This will tell you what devices you have installed. Then you can look for the correct driver, if indeed this the cause of your laptops issue ( prob available on the compaq website ).

    Gl :)

I have also seen cases in which the wireless connection must be turned off prior to connecting via ethernet. sometimes the system doesn't know which connection to use and therefore one connection will "override" the other. I would disable the wifi connection and try just ethernet.
