I have a HP Pavillion dv6605us and ever since i bought it the power button doesn't work to turn on my laptop if i push it to shut it down it will work but to turn it on it won't so i use the dvd button to turn my computer on which makes it take forever to boot any suggestions to fix this

It sounds as if you are not shutting down the laptop properly.
Although you can shut down a computer by simply pressing the power button, this procedure is not the recommended one.
Assuming that you are running some version of Windows, the correct procedure is to click the start button and choose the "Turn off the computer" option.
You can also use the "hot keys" Windows key>the U key pause and then the U key a second time.
This allows Windows to go through a process that closes each program (including Windows itself).
Try shutting down your laptop this way. Wait a few moments and then hold the power button and see if the computer doesn't boot normally.

I would have taken it back. If it didn't work from day one then something is wrong.

I've just done a bit of investigating.
When you say you can turn your computer on by
are you refering to the button labelled DVD above the standard keyboard keys?
According to HP, this is called the "QuickPlay" button and should only function if the computer is already on.
That is: if you have turned the computer off completely, this button shouldn't do anything at all.

It will however call the computer out of "hibernation".
You are certain that you are turning the computer off, right?

Yeah i know I'm a retard and didn't but yeah so if the dvd button is only supposed to work when its on then I'm thinking a power cable is switched up on the inside i need to just break down and send it in for repairs off the warranty
