Is it bad to plug in the power cable to a laptop and yet still have the battery mounted on it?

I assume a decent amount of people do this but i am unsure if it damages the battery in the long run or if it doesn't matter at all?

Off topic: These new social media pops up are beyond annoying, i hide them and when i reload a page they pop up again.

Makes browsing in this website a little uneasy because its hard to not look at these things.

Re: the laptop battery and plugging in a power supply, I've never heard anything negative about it and have never had to replace a battery for any reason so I don't see how it would be an issue.

    Hi

I have tended to if I use my laptop or netbook on a home and daily basis to remove the battery and run off mains only, if on the go then battery is king.

Constantly charging the battery will reduce its life over time, which is why I do the above.

I got a junk laptop with a dead battery... I've been operating it with the cable hookup and it seems to work okay. Will it work without the battery being in there... I'm worried about leakage and want to remove it. Can I operate it without it and just using the plug in?

There is an old trick with NiMH cells you can use to "refresh" the battery, and break up any crystallization which may have formed.

Put the battery in a Ziploc bag, and freeze it for five to seven days. Take the battery out, let it thaw to room temperature, and you MAY find that it will hold a charge better than it previously had. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The batteries only have so many cycles of discharge before they degrade on an atomic level. If that is the case, the only thing it's good for is the recycle bin.

I'm just not that 'in the know' about technology... that's why I'm here. :)

Took apart the laptop and thinking I took the battery out...realized I took the hard drive out. Oh well. Tried again and voila got the battery this time.

It functioned without the battery but not without the hard drive...LOL

I've now put the battery in the freezer for 5-7 days to shake up the crystals and see if it will retain some charge.

You could shop on Amazon or eBay for a generic replacement battery. Back in 8/2012, I found a new battery for a HP Compaq laptop for $15 including shipping from Amazon. The customer reviews was only so-so, but my friend who wanted me to find a battery wanted to try it. That battery is still going today!
