    Hi,
I am wondering if laptops are really that much dependable.
I have heard stories of laptops breaking down soon after being bought.
From personal experiences of people who have laptops, do you recommend them?
Also what are good / bad makers.
    Are Toshiba good laptop makers?
    Thanks.

hi RAY i have a laptop i am now using i have had it 2 years and no problems.

one thing you hear is overheating problems all you need to do is put a book or some such thing and raise the rear of the laptop to increase the air flow and no more problem.

i use an external hard drive and at the end of the day transfer everything i want to keep to the slave drive and store very little on the laptop so that it is always running at optimum speed also if i have a crash i can reinstall my OS in minuets,so all in all i find a laptop as good as a desktop if you only want computing if you are into heavy gaming you need more power so then its the desktop or a very exspensive laptop with lots of power$$$$$$$$$$$

    hope this helps a bit.http://www.techhelpers.net/e4u/comp/comp04.gifhttp://www.techhelpers.net/e4u/comp/comp24.gif

I've owned laptops since 1984 (1986?) approximately. My first laptop :D:D was a Tandy model 4P. Two 5ΒΌ" floppy drives only. No hard drives, and was the size (and weight) of a sewing machine and box that you use to cart a sewing machine around. :D

Next was an Epson (yes they used to make "laptops") 386SX that I took to Sierra Leone, West Africa when I worked there in 1992-1994.

Followed by a Gateway Solo 9300 P3/400, in 1999, top of the range at that time, and my latest is a Toshiba Tecra A7 duo-core purchased in March last year.

I have had no trouble with my Toshiba, except that I forget that there is a volume control slider on the front of the laptop, as well as the Windows volume control.

The Tecra has a fingerprint sensor so you can use it to logon. Most times it works. You have to use it slowly. If you slide your finger over the sensor too fast, or off centre, it won't logon. You always have the option of manually logging on, via the keyboard, if you like.

I have owned, built, sold and serviced desktops as well over the years but prefer a laptop as I visit people at their home to help them out with problems. You can't easily take a desktop with you. :D Bazza

PS: No heat problems with my laptop. You can barely feel the hot air extracted to the left hand side of the desktop. Baz

I worked by a laptop technician for over three straight years, I will tell you that in my opinion the weakest link on a laptop is the hard drive, or uh, should I say laptop user. :D
    Let me continue......

Most of the issues we had were to replace the hard drive. Many laptop users do not understand, that a laptop is mobile. Meant to be taken from one place to another, not necessarily meant to walk around with while it's running. People do not understand that a laptop drive is let's say running at around 5,400RPMs. Well, when you start walking around with it and tilting the laptop back and forth, what do you think is going to happen to the hard drive? It could possibly warp. That's why I was so happy when IBM in 2005 introduced their hard drive protection to help users prevent this. Did it help, well, that depends on the user.(

Oh, and don't even get me started on Tablet PCs.(rolleyes:eek:

Maybe the next generation of laptops could incorporate a flash drive as the main drive? No moving parts. confused
