Laptops

Wanting to get a laptop but am as always confused. It seems if you get a laptop for the most part you get to pick between celerons 1.3 or 1.5 most are like that not all. Some appear to have desktop chips but it seems to me they would get really hot. The pentium M's are 1. something also.
My question, are laptops that much slower then desktops or are say the 1.5's really faster then then number makes them sound.

I should add that I am looking for a cheap laptop.

 

No matter how companies design computers,change the configuration of the cpu's and mobo's they are fighting a losing battle with heat the faster cpu runs the more juice you have to push,which inturn gives off more heat"as you know."The most inefficient way of using electricity is to create heat,so most laptops are designed to run cool so the battery lasts longer,also the entire pc has to squashed into a little flat package leaving less room for airflow,so again they have to make them cooler,nearly every part is made a little bit slower making them slower than thier desktop brothers.

I noticed a good illustration of this is in the psu,my brother has a 2.8p4 desktop with a 400 watt psu,I used to have a compaq presario 2500 laptop p42.8 with a charger that could run the comp without a battery rated at max 90watts,there's simply no way you could run the desktop comp with that charger because its alot more powerfull,and his desktop comp was alot faster in everything.

I'v recently seen reviews of the new alienware laptops "I know your looking for a cheap laptop".

but it has benchmarks comparing them to desktops,and although identical to desktops on paper are no where near in performance I'll try and dig them up.

 

You answered alot of questions with that explanation, thanks. So pretty much what ever I get it won't compare to a desktop. So if I get a laptop with a celeron I'd probably be better off because I won't have the heat problem or potenial for heat problems anyway, right. I'm wanting to Fold on it also but it doesn't sound like it will be a very fast folder if I do get one. hmmm do I really need a laptop or should I just get that AMD3800 I've been drolling over

 

Laptops or portables are simply that,they are designed to be portable,they depend upon the battery power they have and at the moment batteries are "cr@p".The very act of a battery releasing electrical energy gives off heat and uses some of its potential energy in the conversion.

You should ask yourself what you want to do with the computer,if you want one for work any will operate a basic word proccessing prog,if you want one for games you'll spend more than a desktop and it isnt as good,if its for lan parties the convenience of carrying it there will wear off when all your friends kill you because you didn't have the fps and you'll have to find a wall socket anyway after an hour or so.

Its your own question "do you need one".I know how you feel I was the same 6 months ago,its just a new toy,well I sold my new toy and built an A64 3500 winchester system and so far its like christmas every day.I miss surfing the net while watching TV but HL2 makes up for it LOL

Yea the laptop will be a toy but then so will the 3800 AMD. I've got 7 computers running now so it isn't like I need another computer, well depending on how you look at it anyway.
