hello, i was wondering if someone could give me some suggestions, i have a packard bell c3300, its a few years old and served me well, the past couple of months its been turning itself off alot sometimes it takes about 5 or 6 tries to restart it, at first i thought it was a overheating problem, so i cleaned out the fan and it keeps happening, the other day i touched the plug of the adapter and it turned off, i took it out and its red hot!!! does anyone know whether its the adapter thats faulty or the socket on the laptop because the socket gets really hot aswell, has anyone had this problem before, any help would be appreciated.

You should stop using it and take it, the battery and your power supply to a shop now and have all checked out. There must be a sense of urgency, because notebooks in rare cases, have caught fire, caused additional property damage and severe burns.

This could be a number of things, but unless it is a heating element, red hot (or simply abnormally hot) in electronics is bad and indicates too much current is going through something not designed for it. If it is hot where you touch, it could be much hotter inside. Notebook power connectors are known to break as they tend to get abused a lot being jerked about, inserted and yanked out countless times. Most connectors just crack, and become useless. But depending on the connector and how it breaks, a wire may break loose and come into contact with another circuit, "shorting out" the battery or power supply. Not good.

If it is the connector, it can easily be fixed by any experienced notebook technician, once the new part is on hand, and the correct strategic tongue placement required to open the case and access the part has been determined. One hour, two at the most for labor to unsolder and replace the broken part, and give the interior a (likely needed) professional cleaning.

Did you notice if the battery got abnormally hot too? See notebook battery recall.

thanks for your reply, its not the battery because i don't keep it in as it wont hold charge any more, il see if i can pick up a new adapter and if the problem persists il take the notebook to get it looked at, thanks again.

I would at least inspect carefully the notebook's connector first to make nothing wiggles or is cracked in notebook.
