:confused All of a sudden when my pc boots up and Windows XP loads, the desktop icons and text are all enlarged. My desktop wallpaper has disappeared. I go into Display - Desktop, and enable the original desktop background I had -- no success. My screen resolution is set at 1024x768 pixels - font size = normal. That seemed to change the icons to a smaller size - but not the original font size I had before. What is strange also, is that when I shut down XP the original desktop screen background appears briefly before windows shuts down. Any ideas what is causing this problem?
Thanks again for all suggestions and help.

    Corrupt video driver?
It sounds like the video driver isn't loading so the computer reverts to "safe mode" as in no video driver loaded.

Before changing the desktop display and the icon size, go into Hardware and see if you have any red X's or yellow !'s particularly around the Display adapter. Open up the adapter by right-clicking, selecting properties and see what driver is loaded.

When this occurred, what resolution did it say it was running in your display settings?
this sort of thing often happens after a computer crashes. the computer reverts to known safe settings.
