My laptop of several years no longer starts the LCD up when it turns on. I hear the normal beeping sounds and all the lights flash as usual, but the screen doesn't come on. The computer does not stay on; it loads until just before turning on the LCD it seems and then shuts down and tries to boot again. I have difficulty shutting it down because of this sometimes. I just keep pushing random buttons until something shuts it down otherwise it just keeps going by itself. No recent problems until this.

I'm attempting to get a CRT from a friend, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can try in the meantime, or if anybody can tell me what I need to replace.

BTW: My laptop is a 400Mhz with 128 RAM, ATI RAGE Mobility. Dell Inspiron 7000.

I once had a desktop computer that kept shutting itself down before the monitor would display a screen. I was being an idiot about the situation and kept turning the system back on. After turning it on a few times the power supply caught fire. This sounds somewhat similar but is probably totally different from your problem. Your display probably died. That is one reason I recommend spending the extra money when buying a laptop and get the extended warranty for the dsiplay and battery.

Sometimes the cable from the screen to the motherboard can come loose ( all that moving around and opening and closing the screen adds to this ), giving random problems.... now opening it up is upto you to check the connection.

Thank you all for your replies. I'll see if I can manage to get the diagrams to open up the laptop from Dell's site, and maybe it'll start working again. If anyone else has any other ideas, please keep posting. It's all very helpful!
