    Hi

Im thinking about buying a 19" LCD Monitor
to hook up in twin view with my LG 17" CRT

For watching DVDs & TV (TV Tuner card)
    and gaming

I would like to know how much difference the following stats are likely to make
these are the stat ranges from the dozen I have looked at

response time 8ms through to 2ms
    brightness 250 through to 300
    contrast 500:1 through to 2000:1
    normal or widescreen

Im in australia so widescreen doesnt really excite me, tv is still 4:3 over here
just wondering if it has any major benefits for gaming

Also what brands do people like / dislike

Im fairly keen on either Philips or Samsung
both for functionality & price at the moment
looking in the price range of $300 to $400 AUD ($240 to $320 USD)

    All advice and comments appreciated

    thanks :wave

Your welcome. Acers are a good choice, I use two AL1717's, not 19 inch though, and they are very good. Got an HP vs screen as well which is not so good. Mind you everyone has a favourite brand.

LCD monitors are that advanced now the i detail staistics do not really make any differance. Here are some from i company i live by called CCL it is VERY cheap and trust worthy. http://www.cclonline.com/product-categories.asp?category_id=40

I have the cheapest hans G at the top of the list, and i am a serious gamer! and it is fine for me.

But if you do want me to get technical and talk about quality i have 2 top ones.

    1) SONY - anything to do with computers made by sony is guarenteed quality.

    2) Acer - i hav'nt actually ever bought or used a Acer but with the great reputation. It would be my next choice if money did not mean much to me lol.

I hope this clears any choices.

Haven't even heard of the top 4 brands listed - its a long way to Australia, some things take a little while to get here.

It is good to know that a 8ms unit can be used for gaming

The monitor you have, is in the area of what i have been looking at the most
    19"
    8ms response
    700:1 contrast
    300 brightness

what I am trying to find out is whether it is worth while trying to get a 4ms
and how much actual difference increases of contrast and brightness will make

I think Sony is generally a bit overpriced for what it is

    Thanks :wave

4ms is not worth it at all unless you get a bargin. 8ms is just fine mate.

Any ideas on the brightness and contrast ?
Its these two that dont appear to be up to scratch on my crt for watching TV.

I would say that 700:1 is fine. But if you want certainty on your buy here is 2 nice websites from pc world and C:Net that helped me to choose my monitor when i was in your situation.

The buyers guide to MONITORS and also http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-7610_7-5084364.html?tag=tnav

The rule of thumb is the higher the contrast ratio the better but 700:1 is fine.
Remember that there is not standard way of measuring the contrast ratio. so 700:1 on a hanz G monitor could be classed as a 500:1 on a sony monitor.

Just habve a look around on the net!!!

so, the contrast ratio being a variable stat - I wasn't expecting that.
makes it just that bit harder to do comparatives.

Thanks for the links, I will have a look through them in a moment

The sites Ive been to for monitor reviews, are generally too subjective.
They either only review one monitor, or 2 or 3 at a time.
Id love to see a list with 20 monitors side by side.

    Thanks again:seeya
