Besides the fact that price is a plus for CRT, are there any other reasons to get CRT instead of LCD (I'm looking at the pros of CRT right now, not the cons).

I prefer CRT's to LCD's, and especially for gaming.

CRT's can be run at a lot more resolutions and refresh rates, rather than just a native one like LCD's.

They have better viewing angles, and although newer LCD's have improved this feature, they still don't compare with CRT's.

They don't suffer from ghosting, but again, a lot of newer LCD's have addressed this.

They are cheap, very reliable and rugged, and don't suffer from dead pixels.

They usually have better colour clarity and definition, and CRT's are able to represent colour much more realistic and life-like. This is especially true with deep blacks and greys.

    I Have listed Pro's

They fill your desk up.. saves wasting space I guess, my desk does look a little bare with dual LCDs and a keyboard, mouse and coffeee mug on it ;)

Weigh the same as a small house and could give you a hernia when moving, good for a few weeks of work..

Save you from most deadly diseases, sadly give you a small dose of emf/ionized radiation with side effects of headaches and eye strain in the process!

but to be honest it's totally your decision as to which to go for, I know my prefs will differ from others... so I can only advise, two things

    1. Make a Pro/Con list and see what comes out top
    2. Go see both CRT and LCD in action in local PC shoppe[sic]

the clarity difference of my lcd monitor compared to my old crt is amazing. they're easier on the eye, and a 17" lcd seems bigger somehow than a 17" crt. crt monitors are obsolete in my eyes. plus they make me feel ill when i use them now.

I know you wanted pros of crt, but there aren't many real downsides to a good lcd monitor. get one.

    CRT health

    Quote:

Some people believe that CRT monitors "shoot" dangerous radiation from the screen, towards the user. Actually, any small amount of radiation emitted by tube is inconsequential, when compared to the real health risks inherent to CRT technology.

In order to form an image on the phosphorescent screen, the CRT must direct electrons to strike the screen, in the appropriate location. The CRT utilizes a strong electro-magnetic field, to guide the electrons to the correct location on the screen. In order to create the text and image which appears upon the CRT screen, the EMF actually extends far beyond the surface of the screen and the confines of the monitor housing.

In addition, every time the text or the image on the screen changes, the EMF must fluctuate instantly, causing powerful ripples and changes to the shape of the EMF. These strong, constantly changing lines of force pass directly through the body of the computer user. The closer you sit to the monitor, the more deeply immersed in the field you become.

With CRT technology, there is no way to escape the effects of the EMF.

Close contact with any strong EMF will result in a continuous re-juxtaposition of any naturally occurring chemo-electrical process in your body (e.g. your peripheral and central nervous system) and also realigns the iron components in your hemoglobin. According to oriental / macrobiotic medicine, the EMF is very disruptive to the smooth flow of KI, along the meridians of the body.

While the newer LCD technologies are still more expensive (figure an extra $500- $1000 for a unit with an active matrix screen) they totally eliminate the need for a strong electro-magnetic field. This is a small price, indeed, when compared to the long term health advantages!

(just ignore the ki part if you're not that way inclined)

my 17" 12ms monitor only cost £150 in january. they're even cheaper now.

"Long term health advantages", you have to be kidding!

CRT's must abide by very strick emmission standards, and there is no scientific proof to substantiate these myths.

Some people believe Microwave Ovens are also dangerous, but I've yet to be injured by one. :)

CRT's have also been around for 60+ years, long enough to guage any potential health hazards.

Fair points, but you've got to admit that a lot of new technology evolves to be safer than what came before. My last two monitors crapped out with some weird flickering in the corner of the screen. while i can't say if the health dogma is true, i know that when i use crt minors, my eyes strain much quicker. My eyesight deteriorated at work when i worked for a telecomms co, after i got an lcd screen, my eyesight improved slightly and i could work in front of it for longer.

The eyestrain is a fair enough con, as is the size, weight and power consumption.

A decent CRT that has a high refresh rate, say 85 hz, however, doesn't hurt your eyes at all, at least the ones I've used.

I would gladly praise LCD's and buy one if manufacturers didn't try to screw you with dead pixels.

Also, if you like 1600 x 1200 resolution, there aren't many LCD's that can display that.

LCD's are the future, but they still need improvement before they make a CRT obselete in my opinion.

I would like 1600x1200 resolution, but like you say, most lcd monitors (including mine) don't stretch past 1280x1024. There are points for each i guess...

Go to Walmart, A CURSE WORD, And Check Out The LCD Monitors They Are Selling.
I Saw A 19" LCD For $279 This Past Weekend, Not So Shabby...

"and a 17" lcd seems bigger somehow than a 17" crt"

That's because they are. An LCD is measured by screen size while a CRT is measured by the box that the screen comes in. CRTs will also have a viewable size measurement. This is the comparable measurement to an LCD screen size.

"I would gladly praise LCD's and buy one if manufacturers didn't try to screw you with dead pixels."

How are they trying to screw you? Personally, I have 2 LCDs and neither one has a single dead pixel, and most of the time you wouldn't even know it unless you looked real hard for them.

yeah, they come cheap over here too. anyone reading needs to make sure the response time is good. some cheap monitors are okay, but i suspect a walmart monitor would leave you waiting 25ms or so. Walmart suck. I must say btw, that my cheapo monitor doesn't have any dead pixels.

Lol then you could very possibly have a dead pixel or two. I agree my Viewsonic 19" is a BEAST!!! It weighs as much as a small house, and if My desk is against a wall, I cant put my keyboard on the table, beucase the back of the monitor extends so far, that the front of the monitor is almost at the front of the desk! Viewsonic makes some very decent CRT monitors though, and mine, being 4 1/2 years old, actually had a refresh rate of 85hz, and can support up to 1600 resolution, crazy huh?

Sure If I had the money, I would go out and buy a QUALITY, LCD monitor, but I dont, so Ill wait. As for the eye problem....anytime you are that close to a screen of anykind, you are going to get headaches, and eye strains. Hell....I get headaches and eye strains looking at my GF for too long ;)

Would anyone mind helping me find a cheap CRT monitor that doesn't suck, I'd like to spend less on it than my harddrive >_>

Then you are very lucky and yours is the exception rather than the rule.

A lot of people get screens with dead pixels.

As far as how they are dudding you, imagine if you bought a car and it had defects, yet they won't replace it and say it's normal because it's too difficult and costly to make it without defects.

That's just how the industry works. They produce 4 different quality screens covered under the ISO 13406-2 standards, which is international.

The highest and strictest is Class 1, which forbids ANY malfunctions.

This is what military and medical get.

A lot of manufacturers base their warranty on Class 2, 3, or 4, which allow for hundreds of defects.

Why should consumers settle for goods that aren't "up to scratch"?

Tonglebeak, how much money do you have to spend?

Plenty, I get paid tomorrow, but I'm just not looking to spend more for a monitor (including shipping and handling) than I spent for my case and psu ($107).

That makes it difficult with that amount, most decent ones are more than that.

Look for one that can display 1600 x 1200 and 85 hz, (19") but that's going to be an impossible challange for that price.

The cheapest one I'm aware of that does all that is the Philips 19 " 109B6, but it's about US$230.00.

LG do a 19" 910 B for about US$145, but the screen isn't as flat.

If they are too expensive for you then you will have to go for a 17 ".

Thats actually a very nice monitor...High Resolution Capability...Low Dot Pitch (The amount of space between each pixel) Althought I cant find anywhere the amount of colors it can support. Im sure its atleast 16 million
