    Hey,

I'm sure this question gets asked a lot. But, I have heard that CRT monitors are currently better at gaming than a more expensive LCD. LCD's look better, are more crisp ,at one resolution. However, I have heard that LCD's can cause ghosting, and do not look as sharp in more than there native 1024*768. Now.. I have heard that current LCD's have pretty much solved the ghosting prob's, but not the resolution difficulties.

So, what I want to know is what should I get for my next monitor if Im a major gamer?

    Any ideas?

Currently I have a 17" Viewsonic VA720, and run my games at 1280x1024... and I'll never go back to a CRT. Ever. Unless of course this one dies on me unexpectedly... in which case I'll have to break out my old one until I can get a new LCD. But DVD's and games look awesome on it... I can't speak for any other makes and models, but this one does the job :)

IMO CRTs are way better for gaming then LCDs i believe they have higher dpi and response time; not to mention what you pay for a 20" CRT you can MAYBE buy a 15" LCD which is a whole lot less going on. Currently own a 20" Samsung SyncMaster 1100p and wouldnt change it for a 19" lcd.

And about ghosting problems, if your a person with even half a brain you know better then not to leave the monitor on for rediculous amounts of time without changing the image AKA SCREEN SAVER, i dont think thats an xcuse to chuck out alot more money ...

if money isn't an object (solves the price issue), I'd play on an LCD. In fact, I've played BF1942 on a ViewSonic 18" and it was awesome. imo, if you can spring for an LCD, go for it.

now I may be wrong (b/c I usually am) and if I am, please, someone correct me, but I was under the impression LCD's don't ghost like CRT's, because of the way the image is displayed on the screen.

I see some ghosting on my LCD, but its not very noticeable at all.

    I have a 19 inch HP LCD.

Using DVI may be the reasonw hy I see very little ghosting.

Yeh, I've read all that stuff too, but maybe because I'm a stingy Scotsman I chose a CRT because I thought that less could go wrong with it, and it was a lot cheaper to buy in the first place--but then my leisure vehicle is a 12 year old Mercedes truck, and I expect another 12 out of it!

Old technology, you can't beat it; just ask the buggy-whip manufacturers!http://www.majorgeeks.com/vb/images/icons/icon7.gif

don't forget that with an LCD you get a larger viewing area compared to a CRT.

    LCD 17inch ~ CRT19inch (+/-)

I see nothing wrong with gaming on an LCD save for the resolution issue. And issue that will never be solved, LCD's use a set number of pixels in the screen, if you deviate from this resolution then the pixels have to interpolate their new position and you end up with pixels that are bigger (due to pixels "filling out" the space in between you video signal) Personally I prefer a CRT for most everything, I believe that a CRT when properly set up is brighter and crisper than an LCD. Then again, that's just me. Currently I'm using a mitsubishi Diamondtron 91 and I love it @1600x1200. Of course, if you're not into spending an hour adjusting your monitor and getting the lighting right in your room then yes, an LCD is better for instant gratification and never worrying about adjusting due to phosphor aging or somthing of that nature.
LCD's will not "burn in" an image because then use no reactive material like phosphor to produce a picture.

Gonna have to disagree with your opinion ;)

I would love to see someone adjust a CRT that costs the same or less than my LCD to be as visually impressive or as sharp.

I do hate the resolution limitations. Mine is locked in at 1280x1024....on a 19in. LCD

I would disagree that an LCD is quicker to set up, as ive found that it really isnt! An incorrectly set up LCD screen can be disasterous to graphics work. As iceman knows I would imagine after having people on dA with correctly set up monitors complain that there are boxes around certain parts of his wallpapers where the black background on one section isnt QUITE the same as the surrounding black, which isnt noticable on an LCD.

But anyway, this is about gaming, not graphics! I'd think it would be alright, but it might be a little harder to see in darker areas of games.

Go down to a computer shop and check out the visuals. I did a lot of shopping before I picked out a monitor. Since we spend so much to get the best graphics card. CPU and ram etc., we need the best monitor to show what they can deliver. I found the Sony 21" GDM F520 CRT to be the absolute best in gaming. I had to make payments on it, but have never regretted the purchase. Just an opinion! I have seen a couple LCD's that look good (the new Dell being one of them), but there is still an improvement with the F520. Far Cry is just unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi:

I run my LCD at its native 1600x1200.
I don't see any artifacts of any kind.
I mostly play bf1942 + addons + DC & DCX mods with all the eye candy maxed.
Other games/demos I've tried: Halo, NASCAR 2003 & 4, CFS3, the new TOCA and Unreal demos.
    No problems.
Looks great and performance is just fine.
The LCD replaced a ViewSonic P817 21" sm which was no slouch and likely the best ViewSonic CRT ever made.

    Happy trails,

Good call, one thing I forgot to mention is that I have specific profiles set for when I watch a movie, or play a game, or fire up photoshop.

Samsung 172x. 17", 12ms responce time, incredibly thin, sxga native res. The only thing wrong with it is the price tag, arounf 450$. But it's well worth it I've heard.
