The ability to read and write..........

as MA said in another post, get some books from a library on PCs and read up.... the Dummies series of books are superb reading materials http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/

also use a search engine and look for how to's... things like how to build a pc, use your OS, tips and tweaks etc etc

a few I quickly found just by searching google
    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/default.mspx
    http://www.short-media.com/review.php?r=151&p=1

and PCSTATS have loads of how to articals

that means the ability to read ;)

you dont necessarily have to know how to put one together to learn more about them. Heck, half of the people certified in windows and other sofwtare, even programmers, dont know how to put one together. (it's pretty easy actually though).

anyway, if you are interested in learning some basics, check out some of the editorials over at www.pcstats.com some of their stuff gets a little advanced, but they do a good job explaining a lot of computer 'ideas' to beginners.

while $500 wont get you the best system, you'd be surprised what it CAN get you. add a little more money and you can actually make a small powerhouse, guarenteed to be better than your families desktop (unless you JUST bought it and its top of the line)

EDIT: BAH! posted at the same time as Halo... with similar info! darn us.

    :p

yeah, i'd say for around $600 you can get something that would play doom 3 / halflife 2 at pretty decent framerates. something to think about if you ever decide you need your own desktop.

of course..the longer you wait, the better you can get for that price... but thats just normal

  11. X_40's_X

ya there the 2 games i WANT and NEED lol, do i need a good graphic card for them kinda games? i have the regular HL and i play HL : Counter Strike like everyday lol and lots other games and they play fine

  12. InYearsToCome

    InYearsToCome MajorGeek

yes, a good graphics card is the key to playing those games well.

my friend just installed doom 3 on his system running a P4 2.8C and an ATi Radeon 9800 Pro, and it has trouble running any higher than medium graphics settings (there are High, and Ultra, above medium).

so if those are games you are really planning to play, if you can wait a little and save up a little more money, you'd see a big difference. but a $600 system would still play them... but not with as much eye candy.

and also, Doom3 is just ridiculously frightening. by far scarier than any scary movie ever. be warned! :p

hahah, well the graphics card on my desktop rite now is a GeForce 4 MX graphic card i think (more then likely its on the box, hah!) and is that good or can run a game like HL2 or Doom3? and that game is out now??? wtf i thought it just leaked out my accident or somethin lol not the real game came out but i dunno

  14. InYearsToCome

    InYearsToCome MajorGeek

nope, Doom 3 made its public debut this last week. its already here, and Halflife 2 is going public in November ;)

yeah, your GeForce 4 MX (not a true geforce 4, actually a geforce 2) will have a terrible time running the game. even with the most advanced Processor backing that up, you'd still only be able to run the game with minimal settings and very bad performance.

if you'd like to upgrade that family desktop to be able to play those games, you'd need at least a new video card. but first you'd have to find out if you have an AGP slot that would allow you to upgrade, or if the GeForce 4 MX is integrated in your motherboard's chipset.

the easiest way to find out is to look inside your PC and see if you can find a brown slot above the white PCI slots.... or just give us the model # of your computer.

in any case, to play those games well, you're looking at at least a $150 graphics card, if not a $350 one.

omg... i dont wanna upgrade the desktop b/c i cant get on it everyday due to dumb lil bros and sisters, i wanna get my own, and you kno anywhere to get a wireless router and card for less then $120 all together? b/c i was goin to get the linksys router and card at circuit city for $120, for my laptop, and i have like 500 some dollars rite now and im saven up for a computer but i wanna buy that too...i dunno what to do

Maybe You should try out ebay once

  18. InYearsToCome

    InYearsToCome MajorGeek

no, a 9200 will NOT play doom 3 and hl2. 9600 minimum if you want it to be playable. as I said, a 9800 pro was just barely playable with minimal eye candy.

also, if you plan on online gaming, you're not going to want to go wireless. while its more than acceptable for standard networking and internet... you'll have an additional 20-25ms ping for the wireless connection. that translates into annoying and unneccesary lag during mulitplayer internet gaming.

Bah dammit why does everything gotta cost so much cash ive found a bunch of g force 5600 for diff prices on google. 40-140$ but ebay looks better since they got the radeon 9800 for like 100-200$ so i think i might get one off ebay for my new pc.

no, an fx5600 is not great of a card. minimum i would go is a 5700, and if you want to play those games, FX5900XT or higher. like i said, you can get one of those for around $130-$180 and its comparable to a radeon 9800 pro.

i dont know what game Wolf is talking about, but be assured, an fx5200 will certainly not play Doom3 or hl2.

    Welcome to the Forum!

Hmm... 500 bucks... On the first computer I built, I spent about 600, and it was a pretty decent system, (300 for basic hardware: Mobo, I had a HD laying around, and I bought a CD-RW) About 300 for Software (Win XP Pro, Office Student/Teacher edition (sadly, i lost Office)) So... 100 bucks more will make you a decent system!!

Not that any of those articles have a thing to do with the original topic of the thread, but since we seem to have segued into talking about Doom3... The information you need is out there, all you need to do is open your eyes, make Google your friend, and look for it.

OR...lacking the incentive to find out for yourself, you could always look at the front page news of any of a couple of dozen tech sites (I post news for two of them) where the information is all gathered right there for you. :)

yes, i have a fx5200, bought it for like $80, and it runs the game great. just make sure you download the latest drivers. doom 3 ran like crap until i did. i got them from http://www.3dchipset.com/drivers/official/nvidia/nt5/index.php.
i downloaded the 61.77 forceware and the game runs EXCELLENT!

    InYearsToCome MajorGeek

wolf, what are your system specs?

also, what are you running the game in? meaning, resolution, quality settings and so on.

your card by all means should NOT be able to run that game in 1024x768 (standard resolution) and be playable. if it does... i'm amazed.
