Which scenerio is healther for my computer? Should I disconnect the cable modem if I leave the computer on all day unattended? Is it better to power the computer off when not in use?
    Thanks

It's always better to leave the computer off when you aren't using it. That way there is a less chance or something happening. That also lets things that get hot such as the monitor, case, and modem cool down a bit.

age old question and one that did have a long thread here a while ago ( cannot find it now must have fallen foul of the space old posts pruning ) with plus and minus points for either option talked about.

MY personal preference is leave on if I'm only going to be away from the pc for a short time or if downloading a big file and if not going to use PC for a while then I switch off.

two small points are switching on... the power surge can affect hardware that has a weak point as the suddern rush of power could make then fail.... but then at some point they will fail anyway.

leaving on could wear components out quicker.. fans, HDs

... I cannot say that whatever you decide is right or wrong, its a debate thats been going on for years... like the whats the best CPU, AV etc etc

I think on a security standpoint as you have 24/7 net access then if your leaving your pc on but not using the net, its a wise thing to turn off or unplug the modem!

I use my computer daily. So what I do is put it on Standby when I am in work or away. This makes the system alive, but at a very low trickle rate. The system would appear to be off i.e. the fans are off, HD is not spinning. Lowers the electricity cost and when I want to use it again, just press a key and it comes up within seconds, don't have to wait a minute or 2 to reboot.

Things tend to run quicker this way too. Also, if the power goes out, the HD is already not spinning and not much chance of damage. I recomemmend using Standby. Only with Windows XP however, I have had issues where some WIN2K or Me,98 users never wake up from Standby and have to reboot anyway.
