    Hi everyone
my sister has a hp dv2000 which overheated sizzled and flashed blue lights out by the left hand usb

when she gave it to me to look at there was not power at all getting into the motherboard

so i replaced the power cable that was on the righthand side where you plug it in to recharge but that did not help

so after checking a few normal things with battery in and out holding down power button etc it looked like the motherboard was fried
i bought another one of the same model no and fitted it my ist one by the way
after rebuilding the laptop and restarting it all was well apart from no volume
and the blue led lights on the on off switch cover do not light up
although the on off led works
    i have since got volume
but a little confused and aggitated that the quickplay tabs over to the volume tabs do not light up
i think its probable a hardware fault maybe the little silly clear plastic plug
put in place the wrong way although it fits in both ways actually i dont even know what part the clear small plastic plug is there for shame it fits both ways
and maybe i just pushed the cover tape/ribbon in the wrong way
    all plugs are in place
so i guess i may have to take the swich cover off and recheck and try to turn around
any suggestions or maybe i am missing a driver or something
    many thanks

I would think you just need to turn that thing around mate. Fool around with it and put it in different positions. It should eventually light up! That's the best I can say. It's a simple device I mean just lights, shouldn't be so hard to get working. If you can't get it to work than maybe it's damaged?

Hey as long as the computer works it should be better than nothing!

Hi thankyou for your interest and reply
i have tried several ways with the ribbon both with the blue bit showing then the white bit showing then one white and one blue etc with no avail
i have now ordered a new power switch cover ribbon hoping maybe this will help
i have also found out ( that although i have now got the audio working after a lot of messing around ) the mute icon in my task bar does not mute the audio at all it gives me a red cross in the icon and it shows muted in the properties but it does not actually mute it
i have tried uninstalling the conexant audio driver and the bus driver then re installing tried downloading new drivers from hp official website i have used the re install software and drivers from within the programs of hp also done a complete factory reboot all with no avail i think the only thing i havent tried is up dating the bios which i am a little reluctant to do
    any suggestions ????
    many thanks

    Hi Maggie,

Not real sure what's going on. I usually look at the connector on the MB. If the connecting pins go into the connector very near the MB then the (Gold) contacts on the ribbion go toward the MB. If near the top then gold goes up. One thing that sometimes happens is that the ribbon enters the connector in the wrong place missing the contacts completly. Look carefully and make sure you are getting it into the area with the contacts. Hope this helps a little.

    Hope this helps a litte,

    Jim

    Hi Jim
Thank you for your reply and help
I have ordered a new ribbon because this one looks a bit rough and well worn one connector is on the motherboard just underneath the switch cover and the other is on underside of switch cover
i will take another look and try what you said again even though i believe i have tried it this way maybe a new ribbbon will slide in easier and correctly
    thank you
Do you have any input about my audio problem
ist i had a hang of a job to get audio
now i cannot shut it up (( haha)) :-D
when i mute it the sound icon in my task bar and the audio properties shows a red cross
but the volume does not mute
when i start anything up that uses volume it is still there and not muted
    :confused:confused:cry
    many thanks maggie
ps quickplay blue led lights and keys not working at all
