This is a request for legit help, not trying to steal software. I had a system crash, and need to reinstall Nero from the CD-RoM I have. It wants a serial number, I no longer have this. Is there a workaround?

There is an incredibly easy fix for this problem. If you're asking for "legit help, not trying to steal software" and you actually "paid for and registered" your Nero program try the Nero FAQ link below:

Direct Quote from the Nero Website FAQ:

I have lost my Nero/Nero Express serial number and can not find it on any jewel case or paper sleeve

If you have registered your Nero/Nero Express retail version and are unable to locate your serial number because you lost or just misplaced it, please send us an e-mail to sales@nero.com and we will provide you a new one.

Important note:
Sorry, but if you have not registered your Nero/Nero Express and are unable to locate your serial number, we will not be able to provide you a new key!

If you own a Nero OEM-Version, we need you to provide a copy of your proof of purchase along with your name and e-mail address. We can confirm the purchase and create a new serial number for you. Send all this information via fax to +49-7248-911-888.

Please allow 2 to 3 working days for a response back via e-mail or fax from our sales team.​
