Lenovo T43 . lack of sound.

I have a recently acquired a Thinkpad T43 running XPpro SP3 which is fine except I cannot get any sound. Control panel "sound" returns No audio device. Device manager shows legacy audio driver and click on returns "device working OK" although that and all items and audio codecs are question marked. I have downloaded what I think are the correct driver files from Lenovo but still no sound available. Assistance would be appreciated
