WEll, first off let me introduce myself. My name is Andi and I live in the upper midwest, close enough to Lake Michigan to be able to visit daily. I am not a novice nor am I an expert at computers, so some things I understand and others are way over my head.
So I guess I am saying some patience required. Ok, now here is my current problem.
First off the computer is over 8 years old......I know, but we work with what we have. Anyway, we are running Windows 98, with a Pentium II processor, 256.0MB Ram and a 32 bit file.
Ok, so it is old and slow. That is not the problem. Well I do not think that is the problem.
Ever since we got Comcast high speed internet...( oh and if you have ever had the pleasure of getting Comcast to help you, you will understand why I am here now) for our computer, the things been flickering to the point where you can get real sick real fast, and forget trying to do videos......we never had this problem before.
By the way this problem has had three visits for Comcast and still it persists. So helpful they are.
    So.........help.

    Andi,
we would love to help you, but I think I speak for everyone when I ask for more info on the problem. You said it's "Flickering". The moniter? have you tried another moniter? I realize that you have limited resources, but can you give us more information on when the problem occurs... what exactly happens? Thanks!

    :) Thanks for the response.
Ok, more info. The screen flickers whenever you try to scroll down, ( scrolling is more like a new screen change as to the even rolling of before) try to view a video, and like right now, the cursor is even flickering. The smillies off to the right are flickering.......all of this started once we got comcast high speed internet.
Oh, and please, less geek speak and try to dumb it down for me as I am not that computer savvy.
Oh, and thanks for your intelligence and help.

Click on the advanced tab ...then you should have three options (performance, user files and startup ....with a button for settings on each item ....) ....do you not have this?

OOps ...just remembered your running 98 ....should still have options under performance.

performance may be bogged down by excessive visual effects. To get a perkier Windows 98, 2000, or Me, right-click the desktop, choose Properties, and click the Effects tab. Begin unchecking items in the Visual Effects box at the bottom of the dialog box until you find the right balance of speed and attractiveness for you.

If Windows XP becomes sluggish, turn off some of the visual fireworks that may be taxing your screen updates via the Performance Options dialog box. Open Control Panel, and if you're using the default Category view, click the Performance and Maintenance link. Under 'Pick a task', choose Adjust visual effects. If you're using the Classic view of Control Panel, double-click the System icon. (Alternatively, you can right-click My Computer in Explorer and choose Properties.) Click the Advanced tab, and select the first Settings button (under Performance).

The Visual Effects tab lists check boxes for turning individual effects on for more razzle-dazzle or off for better performance (see FIGURE 5). The preset options at the top of the dialog box simplify matters: If Let Windows choose what's best for my computer isn't already selected, choose it and click OK twice. Try this setting for a while, and if you're not satisfied, return to the dialog box and click Adjust for best performance, which unchecks all the visual options. If you miss some of the excitement, open this dialog box again and experiment by turning individual effects on one by one until you find a good balance between sizzle and steak.

What is a video card and how do I update it? Is it something I can download or is it hardware to be physically installed?

Done that, still jumpy and flickering......what next?

Video card ....both a physical device (may be built into the motherboard) that uses drivers (and can be updated). You can also purchase a PCI video card for cheap which may help, or an advanced apg card (not sure your system could handle it) ....device manager ...display adapters ..properties ...report what you have there.
