Lets see if you geeks can figure this one out. And I can only work with what I got can't buy anything can't spend any money. I have two PC's, one's a desktop PC with cable internet connecton and a 56k modem for backup. The others a laptop with no floppy drive and a 56k modem. Both modems work but i'm not signed up for phoneline internet and I can't signup for anything I have to pay for. so I can't connect to the net with the laptop. Okay here's the problem I despertly need to get this small file from my desktop PC to my laptop. Now my laptop does have a cd-rom but my Desktop doesn't have a CD/RW so I can't transfer by CD. Can you guys figure out how i can transfer the file. It's driving me nuts

No, it was Never Mind. I mis-read your OP (original post), and suggested emailing it to yourself, but you have no dial-up. Do you know anyone with dial-up willing to give you their user/pass and let you dial-in to their local number? They could always change their pass first and then change it back after you're done. Use the laptop to mail it to yourself, then dial-in with the PC to retrieve the email with the file attached.

Is there a way to set up my PC to be a server and then i can use the laptop to call it and then download the file.

Cable accounts usually don't give dial backup. But DSL usually do, if it's from the phone company. There's probably some way to do it serial port to serial port with a null modem cable (nothing to do with modems). But your modems want to talk to something with dialtone, and there might be some way too inlvolved way to get them talking to eachother, but I doubt it. Or do a Google on "free dialup" and see if there's something in your area.

ya i did that. all the free ones have software to download. i'm in IL if you know of any.
Have you ever heard of a thing called multicomm. i think it has something to do with connecting to computers over a phoneline but i can't find anything on how it works.

well I have two modems and two phonelines at my house but do i only need to download on one comp.

My guess would be both. One would probably put the modem into auto-answer mode, and the other would basically be dialing in to it, using the software to negotiate a connection. I wonder if there's away to natively do such with XP, if that's what you have.

I believe you can do it with 98SE. Google "98se dialup server". It looks like you can get a peer-to-peer connection like a LAN if you set the machines workgroup names the same, and share resources on the server computer.

Cool can you tell me how or show me a place that says. cause you got that off the pcmech forum right and they don't say how to dial into the cable network.

You said you have two phonelines-- that's what you will have to use. Win98SE's own Help should be able to point you to how to set it up. In XP there's a wizard to do it-- don't know about SE. Never tried it, don't have any 98 machines any more to test on.

Go to a family/friend/relative's house that has 56k dialup and connect through there.

He's posting over a cable modem account. He has no dial up account, and the laptop has only a modem.

You tell the laptop to dial whatever phone number the modem of the PC is hooked up to and will be answering.

Thanks Doug It worked. i transfered the file over a dial-up network. it was a driver for an external cable modem for my laptop and i'm now typing this with my laptop. thanks again
