I have a 256M jumpdrive that is having problems being recongized by my computer. I am using XP so there should be no driver issues, however when i plug it in, that is exactly what its looking for. Its showing up in the device manager under ? Other Devices - ?!Jumpdrive. I am using other jumpdrives with no issues. I have contacted Lexar and they have no support for this. Any ideas on how to connect with the jumpdrive.

    SuperDave,

It sounds as if the device has taken a turn for the worse.

What is happening is in the plug 'n play negotiation isn't working. From your description, it is working with other UFD's so the problem isn't with your computer.

Bring up the device manager. Go to details. Scroll down to "Compatible Ids".
Look for three strings like the following:

    USB\Class_08&SubClass_06&Prot_50
    USB\Class_08&SubClass_06
    USB\Class_08

These are the basic USB class settings that all general purpose USB Flash devices use. (the device class is hex08, the sub_class is hex06, and the protocol is 50 - this is normal).

Compare one of your working devices against what you see here.

If the entries for this device are scrambled or corrupted, the device won't be recognized. If they are scrambled or corrupted, see if Lexar will swap the device for you - this is a symptom you can point to as a device failure. Their support is often good.

    Luck,
    JG

Thank you for the response. The information i put on that drive is what matters most to me at this point.

The device has the following info:
    USB\Class_ff&SubClass_00&Prot_50
    USB\Class_ff&SubClass_00
    USB\Class_ff

A comparable device was not even close with text

    USBSTOR\Disk
    USBSTOR\Raw

Not sure what all this means, but is it configurable? i am desperate to pull the data off the device.

    SuperDave,

Don't shoot the messenger, its not my fault...
Your drive will never be recognized as USB storage as is.

It sounds like the internal stored memory that tells the device how to act as a mass storage device has been corrupted. The drive needs to be re-manufactured (or tossed) - which typically doesn't save data.

You could try Lexar support. The bad strings for device type are a major clue that there was a device failure (i.e. not you or your machines fault).

If you are really desperate, there are expensive services that will take the jumpdrive apart, unsolder the Flash device, mount in another device, read it and save the data they can. I think cprtools does this for flash. I think I remember that the back of PC Magazine or PC World has recovery services.

I wouldn't spend money on recovery software out there - my understanding is that those are designed for a working drive with a scrambled FAT or scrambled partition table. Your drive is damaged at a deeper level, in psychological terms, it doesn't know it is a flash drive anymore.

FYI, USBSTOR\Disk & USBSTOR\RAW are port drivers IDs, not device IDs. I'm surprised to see them in device "Compatible Ids".

    Sorry
