I recently built a computer and overlooked that i bought windows xp oem. This version of the os has given me nothing but problems. So here is what is happening to me

When i shut my computer down and restart it if I am lucky I'll load the desktop other times when I am unlucky I get a error message saying application failed to load due to licensing issue. It would give me a error code then only give me one option to click ok once i click ok it goes to log me off then just freezes. Evenutally I'll have to manually reboot the computer and yet again it will come up it eventually got to the point where it wanted to tell me my paid and legit copy of windows xp pro was not geniune.

I have surfed the net messed around with the registry files that I got for solutions, nothing works. I finally had to reformat the computer and put a fresh copy of the os back in. started up fine the first time but low and behold the next time i restarted the computer the message came up once more. I am now afraid to turn off my computer cause the chances of it actually getting to the desktop seem to be a fifty fifty chance it will not come up with the error.

O and I have contacted microsoft and I will not paid them 60 bucks for tech support to tell me whats wrong.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

Did you activate Windows over the internet when it was initially installed?

That is, did you enter a product key?

    hi,

i know a little about OEM copies of windows - and from my reckoning they were / are 'locked' to a certain mobo/computer when the CD is made, how did you obtain the CD? and how long ago did u buy it?

Not all OEM are 'locked to certain mobos'. The likes of Dell do put a bios check for their hardware but you can buy a generic OEM version of Windows. At most times you have to be a system builder or purchase it with hardware. ie They make you buy a mouse with it..lol.
Where did you acquire such OEM & serial key, poster?

hi, SVicious - sounds like a very annoying problem

but one suggestion - do you have any other copies of XP or windows operating system at your disposal? because my suggestion would be to install one of them (freshly) then you would know if it was the PC playing up, or simply the OEM copy of windows, then if it is the OEM copy of windows you could go from there, atleast it would put you on solid ground, you know?

I do not have a key for the retail version would my oem key work with the tetail version ?

How do you not have a key for the retail version from Tigerdirect? It should be printed on the folder the installation disc comes in.

All I can say about the other key is, is it for XP? If not, no way...

Retails are usually coded specifically to the disc and product key they came with.

Also, I'm slightly confused by your description at this point.

I do have a windows xp pro cd - no key though i use it for work related issues repairs and what not

What I was asking is if i put the windows xp pro in would i be able to use the oem cd key for that particular windows version

No the keys are not the same... when your install the OS are you wiping the drive? Are you trying to activate during the install?

Best wipe the drive and do not connect to the network, you should have 30 days to activate.

Its the first thing i do is activate windows after a fresh install i have already done the reformat and put a fresh copy in and got the same error

ah, yeh but what he means is - format your computer (sorry you have to do this again) but do not connect to the internet at all on it, and then it won't be able to check its sites and complain about licensing - i mean software isn't very smart really, unless it has a server to correspond to it should just install and be ok. but if it happens again - or if you can remember it, what is the 'exact' error message? it would help to find the problem.

I shut my computer down last night and when i booted it up the next morning i got system logon error on the log on screen rebooted and it by passed it then it came up application error dr watson debugger, and now my kaspersky anti virus keeps getting error messages. so again i reboot and the 3d taskbar that is blue was white looked like it was windows xp version and still got the anti virus error, so yet again i rebooted and still get the anti virus error but it looks like pro again sigh.

Beginning to think maybe I got a bad windows disk, I am backing up my info not like there is much there considering i can't use the damn os long enough to put anything on there.

as for the error now it seems i am getting assortments of errors after reboot, not just the licensing error, when the error comes up again i'll copy it down and post it so far it hasn't yet knock on wood.

As for not activating eventually its gonna telll me it needs to be activated so what then?

And no internet is a unacceptable solution to my problem

adding to dom's post, your problem may not be activation related, but something else, like a bad hard drive, or a bad xp disc.

I'd agree if the errors seem to be 'moving' around it may be a bad hard drive.
Go get the manufactures tools or UBCD and run their scan on the HDD.
But it could be bad RAM too... some of these errors are just plain hard to nail down.
