On the phone with a patient:

Pt: Hi, I spoke to my insurance and they told me you are on the list to take Medicare.
    Me: Yes. we do.
Pt: Oh good. I would like to set up an appointment for routine eye exam.
Me: Sure, that's not a problem! but just so you are aware, Medicare does not pay for anything that's routine. They will only pay if you have *lists a bunch of medical problems* but they will never pay for any routine examinations.
Pt: So will Medicare will pay for my exam?
Me: No, ma'am, Medicare will not pay for anything routine, if you'd like to still schedule an appt, you'd have to pay out of pocket.
Pt: Oh, so Medicare won't pay?
    Me: *inward sigh*

This happens to me several times a week. If people would only listen...

I feel you are trying to make a point. Can you explain? Does Medicare pay for routine stuff or not? o_O

I firmly believe there is no limit on stupidity.

Lack of information to patients is worldwide and just goes to show that folk do not know what they are entitled too, not your or companies fault but the system as a whole, in the UK even though we have free at point of delivery healthcare some things are still at a cost to patient and eye exams are one, you can get a free one if you are diabetic, family history of glaucoma etc and retired past 65yrs but while you get one free eye exam past 65yrs some opticians urge you to get retinal images at a cost from £0 - £20 a shot, personally you dont need that unless you know what you are looking at as most opticians dont from the referrals I get to my clinic (some really good but large chains not so good), but most dont know you can have a 2nd eye exam free if you think you have a sudden drop in vision.

Dont personally thing the industry and healthcare has given out clear advice on what you are entitled too and also what symptoms to look for for years, locally its getting better in eye care as some charities locally have stepped up to the plate and educate rather than criticise and I chat to a local charity volunteers all the time and share info.
