Like some thoughts on my old Desktop situation.

About two years ago now, I have an old Dell Dimension 8400 desktop. Big ole tower I know, but hey, it was the "thang" back in 2005. Anyway, I decided to get Windows 7 and put in a brand new 500GB HD with RAM upgraded to 4GB. So far, it continues to run without any performance issues.

I currently use it as a home server, in that, I have turned on file sharing and use a workgroup amongst computers in the home and map a drive on those computers back to the Dell. That way pictures, songs, documents are all saved there, and then there is a backup that is run off the "Home Server".

Here's my issue. The desktop is 6 years old now, and while it's running great now, I know that I am just a Processor or motherboard away from a total failure. Would it make sense now to buy a newer desktop to replace the "Home Server" or, should I basically wait it out until the thing dies?

I have a home server that is much older than that. If you have a backup, let it continue to serve you. ;)

Agreed. As long as you have your critical data and files backed up in another location and this machine is still serving you, let it run until it croaks. :)
