I've never used Limewire/ Bearshare or any other file exchange stuff...But I've become curious of late: How bad/dangerous are those things if you just download music? With Norton, Adaware, Spybot and Spywareblaster on my laptop with regular win update (xp pro), router firewall, windows firewall, is it too dangerous to try or shall I give it a try?

    how safe/unsafe are those sites?

any experiences/users? any advice/tips is appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hello mate
I've had a bit of experience with Limewire. Music wise the files are fine but when you start to look at programmes its virus central.

Agreed....I would download everything you get from them into a special folder and run virus scans on them (including music files) before doing anything else with them.

You have to be careful about the programs themselves, too. Often they come chalk full of maware. Limewire is the best as far as that goes. I would recommend going the torrent route using utorrent and a site like demonoid.

Bearshare comes bundled with malware. Don't use it.

As for Limewire Musksnipe is absolutely correct. Have a seperate folder and don't open anything without scanning it first.

You should probably bookmark this link.

You have to give Limewire permission to by-pass your firewalls before you can even install it.

Remember, you are basicly giving people access (albeit, limited) to your files. Do you think that sounds safe?

I've used it a few times, no problems. Always ran virus scans, etc.

you can use bit-torrent to get limewire pro for free, that is very convenient do not download ANY exe files off limewire. the only partially safe exes are from the bittorrent sites.. scan everything. other than that, limewire is safe. just specify the sharing folder to a folder you dont keep anything.. call it limewire downloads... other than that, i've downloaded 6gb of music and 32gb of vids from limewire. and its sweet lol.no virius either.so yes its safe, just dont get the exes or zips..

i used kazaa before and it destroyed my pc. albeit a few years later with better pc experience i would stay well away from limewire/bearshare etc.its just to costly if anything happens, however i do dl with u torrent and use torrent spy to look for legal torrents. still not safe from threats but spy torrent has a comments section so you can see the legitimcy of the file there.mada milty helped me differenciate between the two a few months back

I've just explained in your other thread about our policy on this.

    Please don't persist in asking.
