Well I posted this problem a while ago but still haven't really found a solution. Basically, for whatever reason, when I have Limewire installed on my computer, my internet will randomly lock up when I'm browsing. It completely disables any browser (both Firefox and IE) until I restart, even though it's clearly not a connection problem since I am still able to talk to people on my instant messenger. As soon as I uninstall Limewire, the problem goes away. So I have a major dilemma because I need to have Limewire, and it's a pain to have to uninstall and reinstall it constantly, but on the other hand, it's even more of a pain to have to restart my computer so that I can browse again. Any ideas what might be causing this or how to fix it?

    Hi strider1722
P2P programs are notorious bandwidth hogs. This is why your browser freezes up. It just can't get a word in edgewise. So, you need to take a little pressure off. In your Options menu, under Speed: select Modem instead of CableDSL. Also select the setting Disable Ultrapeer. Under Uploads->Basic: Choose the slowest Upload Bandwidth. This should allow your browser to play too. Once it's working for a day, then you can choose a slightly faster Upload Bandwidth and test that for a while. You'll eventually find the fail speed so set it one notch below that.:)

I just got a knockoff called Frostwire (you can get it at http://www.frostwire.com/index.php?title=Main_Page) and it seems to be working great. My downloads even go faster with it, so take the time to check it out because Limewire's not going to be a reliable source for long anyways.

This is an excerpt of an article I found telling people that Limewire is officially in the process of banning people from sharing their music. The entire article can be seen here:

Then, on September 13, 2005, the RIAA sent several letters to various P2P developers. The letter, which LimeWire is believed to have been a recipient of, demands that P2P developers prevent their users from infringing on copyrights or face litigation. It now appears that LimeWire might bow to this demand.

Approximately 3 to 5 days ago, LimeWire developers began working on two new branches, cc_reverify_interval-branch and cc-publish-branch. The code in the first branch works to verify that every file shared has a license. If this is not the case, the file will not be shared. The second branch is for publishing one's own work without a license. According to the release notes, individuals can attach a Creative Commons license if the work is either their own or have permission to distribute the work.

If an individual shares an unlicensed MP3 file, the LimeWire client will display the following message and prevent its distribution:

"LimeWire can't determine if one or more files have been published under a suitable license. These files will not be shared."

According to a LimeWire beta tester who informed Slyck of this news, this feature is nearing completion. Once completed, developers will simply wait for the signal to integrate these branches with the main branch, providing Mark Gorton, CEO of LimeWire, decides to go through with this.

Who cares how many they close down, more will just reopen.

It's been happening for years ever since Napster, and the RIA hasn't learnt it's lesson yet.

Not sure why it would screw up your PC... Seemingly tons of people use it and there are very few complaints about anyone's PC getting messed up from using it... It's also spyware free....

Could be a conflict with something else on your system that's causing your problems...

Never had a problem with viruses/spyware with limewire..If you use proper antivirus and spyware programs, you will be fine.

Also, limewire is still going pretty strong, dont know for how long, but i agree with Insomniac, another one, even better than limewire will come up. P2P will never die.

If you have determined that Limewire is your problem, and it appears that you have, then make sure that it doesn't load at startup. I used this program for about two weeks when I was on dialup just to see what all the P2P fuss was about. I uninstalled it when I found that it was using my PC as a server without the program being started. Seems like it installed itself to run in the background without my permission. Hope this helps!:)

Well I do have a firewall and antivirus. I dloaded some Filters for CS2 and when I opened up the zip file about 5 virus alerts popped on. Since then my PC has been running odd.

It's not spyware free. Some versions have Spyware included. That's documented in plenty of sites.

Even if you find a version that doesn't, you still have the risk in downloading from another persons computer.

If you have to use P2P, at least use Bit Torrent. That's about the safest it's going to get.
