Can someone give me the low down as to Limewire.

My son has now upgraded to a paid version of Limewire Pro, and apparently set options to not file share. Is there any risk to 1.) his PC, and 2.) our PCs (We are all on the same wireless connection, with one of our PCs being the 'mothership', but we are not set up as a workgroup between us).

I noticed the when I open my iTunes, his folder name now appears in my list. Is this just because we are on the same wireless connection, or can anyone see this now?

    Thanks.

Biggest problem is downloading anything illegal. Files are intentionally placed there infected. Theres a ton of porn, pictures, music and crap on there. I usually share an empty folder. As for risks, well, I can't point to anything specific, but in the long run, p2p programs usually cause problems. They are on my list of things that you find infect many people knowadays with malware:

    1 Porn
    2 illegal music
    3 illegal movies
    4 p2p programs

P2P (#4) offers 1-3 and more. Just use caution and be sure he knows what he is downloading. I assume file and print sharing are off? While it can be done, I feel this is a security risk not needed.

Thanks MA...we've had (yet another) nice little chat, and I have re-configured some of his Limewire settings to reduce problems (he had it pointed to an empty folder already). Also set the bandwidth down from 100%!!! (I wondered why hubby and I kept crashing out). And yup, file and printer sharing are off.

I totally agree with you on the security risk just isn't worth it, but he wants it and so I've set it up so that any problems are now limited and limited to his computer (I hope!).

    Thanks for your help :)

Itunes uses a shared type libary. Which basiculy searchs out any other itunes shared folders and allows you access them via the network. Not sure if that works with other apps, but probably is the case. As far as other people seeing it, only the stuff in his shared folder designated via limewire would be shared, not the auto libary sharing itunes does.

If you have internet connection sharing set up for your son's comp. then your firewall has permissions open for your son. Like MA says turn off your file sharing between the two comps or your files are as open as his.

See you have plenty of people watching out.

Make sure you turn off the "Chat" option that is set into Limewire. Chat alowws browsing of your sons comp.

Thanks guys....keep it coming if you think of anything else :)

I have turned off the chat feature; file/printer sharing on all 3 PCs is disabled.

I had these same questions and followed your suggestions...I forget though where to go to "turn off file /printer sharing"

I work from home remotely and use network printers remotely - can I turn this feature off?

I'm having my daughter NOT use Limewire once I explain it all to her and we'll set up an iTunes account (her mp3 player isn't one of the ones that works with iTunes but we can download it to the pc then upload it, etc.)

But, I know file/printer should always be off - but it confuses me about remote access (but now I'm off topic - sorry, should have posted this elsewhere - it's just I was researching Limewire and one thing lead to another)

    Start>Control Panel>Network Connections, then...

Right click Wireless Network Connection>Properties, then...

Uncheck File and Printer Sharing option and click OK.

I think the topic is related. Others who disable File and Printer sharing may want to know the same thing about remote printer access too.

I think everything is related, as a comment, when I work on a computer always turn all of those "features" that include the word "sharing" off., so the users do not have problems; plus the use of AdAware, Spybot, AVG and Spamfighter keeps almost all kind of troubles at bay.
