    Hello,

Let me keep this as simple as possible....

    WinXP system
    Always On Cable Modem
    Gateway 614GE PC

Just completed a full restore and internet connection is now showing "Limited or No connection" (Details shows bytes sent, none rec'd)

Have tried a Winsock fix, no luck
Have tried a connection repair, "cannot renew ip address"
    Secondary connection showing: "1394 Connection
    'connected'
    "1394 net Adapter"

    Connection Details:; Value
    Physical Details xx-xx-xx-xx-xx-xx (omitted)
    IP address xxx-xxx-xxx-xxx (omitted)
    Subnet Mask xxx.xxx.x.x (omitted)
    Default Gateway (blank)
    DNS Server (blank)
    Wins Server (blank)

All other settings appear to be normal but I know I must be missing or not trying something and I would be happy to provide other necessary details if needed.

:) Any and all help is appreciated.

Are you getting a 169 ip? if so thats a default windows assigned one which means its not making a connection to your cable modem or router.

    Colemanguy,

I DO have a 169 ip but as I stated prior, I cannot renew.
I am running direct from pc to cable modem.

I also know I'm using a working internet connection as I am swapping the same connection between this pc and the non-working one.

I have checked thru Device Manager and my (on-board) network card shows working and shows a driver installed.

    Totally perplexing.

    Any thoughts?

sounds like your modem may have died

you obviously know how to get to the properties boxes.

In the first one (network) have you got
    'client for microsoft networks'
    If not add it in
I am assuming TCP/IP is there so on its properties
    Wins should not be used
DNS and Gateway shouls be blank, are the automatic radio buttons checked?
Alternatively read the IP addresses from the other pc and set them in manually to get to the router.

If you have a router, make sure the DHCP server is running on the router to assign an IP to the computer. If your not running a router, you should be, but then the IP should be assigned by the modem itself. If you know the address to access the router (like 192.168.1.1 on a Liksys) you can use that address as an example of what to set for a Static IP. If your router is 192.168.1.1 then you can set your address to 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.254 with a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.0 and a Default Gateway of 192.168.1.1

You might also try ipconfig /release and then /renew to stay with a dynamic IP

    :confusedHello all
I've been reading, researching diligently on this issues. It's seems like lots of people having the same problem and more than one way to solve it. But here's mine:

I tried everything..almost on line that I could find to fix this problem. Another computer at home connecting fine, but once using the same cable, same box, no joy for the other.

    -Restored
    -Scan for malware, virus
-Turn on, turn off, reboot PC, router
    -Run winsockfix.exe
    -IP CONFIG/ALL, RENEW, RELEASE
-Reset netsh winsock reset (same as winsock.exe..I guess)
-Change Speed and Duplex on Advance tab
    -Reinstalled driver
    -Disable Firewall
-Last but not least..bought a new Ethernet card, disable the other one..but both does not work neither. Anyone has ANY other ideas or different trouble shooting that can share here to enhance our knowledge of this weird problems, I am all ears. Thanks a lot in advance for helping us out.

In addition, I can't renew or repair. Checked thru Device Manager and my (on-board) network card shows working and shows a driver installed.
    -WINS not used
-DNS and Gateway blank, automatic radio buttons checked

    Thanks a lot in advance:confused
