Lindows OS 3.0

I was wondering if anyone has used Lindows OS 3.0, and if so, how they like it.

I have heard it runs very similarly to XP, but being based on Linux, is sounds a hell of a lot better to me.

I'm curious how many things will be easily compatible with it, since they do claim Windows Drivers support...

If anyone has any comments i'd love to hear them.

Also, if anyone knows where my lazy butt can get a free version to see if i like it? i'd really appreciate it. Best i can find right now is Lindows OS SP2<< only compatible with win98SE/2000

    thanks

First and foremost, we are a shareware site and do not allow discussion of pirating software. First off its illegal and second off its disrespectful to allow that on a shareware site where many of the authors come to. Hope thats clear.

Lindows is ok, used it for a while, but frankly I prefer the freely available for download Red Hat. My latest problems came trying to install Nforce drivers, couldnt find them and when I did, Lindows does not support tar files directly. I sent this to support and never heard back. Didnt see support forums. One of the reasons people buy software is for updates and technical support, both which seem lacking to me. Not a good first experience, wheres Red Hat has a lot of users and many, many ways to get answers. Hence, Lindows will never get a dime from me again.

Frankly, unless your running hardware released in the past few months, Red Hat or Lindows will detect all of your hardware just fine. They both always did for me, just neither one knows what the Nforce board is yet and even worse, neither seems to want to use my Nforce network card once the drivers are installed, so I am out of the Linux game for a bit.

Oh, and Lindows is at 3.0.5 at last check.

Looks like my question WAS answered, gee, I guess I was wrong, enjoy:

I need Alien to convert RPM files so I can setup my Nforce 2 board to connect to the internet. Since your software does not recognize the newer Nforce motherboard, its a bit difficult to connect to the internet since its onboard Nforce networking. So, now what?

    Response (Yvan) 02/20/2003 11:52 AM
Sorry to hear that. Catch 22 for you. Suggest talking to Nforce for support.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See, Lindows loves click and run so much, they dont offer actual files I can downloads and copy to cd to install, no, no, no, see I need to be using Lindows to use click and run to install Alien so Lindows will support RPM files so I can install the drivers.... All which requires the internet which requires the steps above.... Got all that?

    Nuff said. Lindows bad.

My pleasure and welcome aboard if you have not been welcomed yet. Phillip from ntcomaptible.com pointed me to an article that really explains Lindows well. It actually addresses some of the questions the Linux crowd has, but if you can read it from top to bottom, you will get the general idea. Like you, I wanted to try it... I think it had great potential.... Problem is, hes trying to lock up selling software with Click N Run and really isnt offering much with it, and at a hefty price... And people hate Bill Gates.... Well Windows wasnt built off a current open source OS.

Lindows isn't that great, if you want a start with Linux I would recommend Slackware or in VMWare Slackware, or on another HDD slackware, or anotehr comptuer slackware, or another network slackware, or ...... :D Slackware r0x0r j00! First distro and I truly reccomend it over anything, install was a breeze (ncurses based install like FBSD, nice.) slackware.com and for a good book slackbook.yoshiwara.org.uk

MA: True but DOS was, the 16 year old who made it copied BSD code and used it inside DOS so Windows is based of UNIX but it was such a long time ago and so many changes have happened that they are no longer alike at all (hell the GUI runs in the kernel space 0o)

Show me the download page where it is freely downloadable please?

Thanks in advance for sharing with us where on Lindows.com or any other legit Unix site it can be downloaded from. It would be great if this was true, but its news to me. Any searches come up with old non working warez links or links to Lindows.com where you need to sign up and buck up. Also, while searching, I found WinLinux, similar name, simlar idea, downloadable as free or from their website for 9 dollars with no support, 29 with lifetime support, any chance you got your Linuxes confused? Anyway, in the future, it would be easier for us all to back it up with legit download sites, rather then a liscense, one which can be easily worked around, ask any Linux geek about getting the source code to Lindows :)

Let us know, otherwise I believe the only confusion so far would be your own post :)

In theory yes, Lindows is just Debian with WineX, but it's not OSS, one of these days it'll get sued, I'm waiting for the day :D MA was right, it's not freely released legally, Lindows "the unstability of windows, the incomptability of linux" :D

Well, as I was saying, those things can be gotten around. Sadly, the downside to an Open Source project as large as Linux is sooner or later someone will attempt to profit from it. Its a real shame too, Lindows had potential, but it has give me money over and over and attempts to make people stay at Lindows.com to buy software to the point it makes Bill Gates look like a saint, something that really should get the Linux gang pissed if they want an issue.

My thought would be that the source would cost so much no one would buy it, that website I linked to above confirms that is legit, the question is, can Lindows say they are charging the "annual fee" for support only? If they do, at that point, they will have to do what WinLinux did and offer it for download for a few bucks or download + support and CD-ROM, of course.

Oh well, all that from a linux newbie (i toss that in just so no one assumes I am speaking Gospel, I am speaking what I think I have learned so far, so correct me if i am wrong) It is fascinating, somehow I expect to spend a lot more time tinkering with Linux. I just got WinLinux (ugh) and Mandrake is next on my testing plate and then maybe Lycoris..... From what I read Mandrakes is supposed to be pretty cool..

    Ok, im blabbering..

Slackware 9.0 beta is out :D But yeah, Linux community isn't to happy about it and Lindows is trashed all over :D It's really not to legal what they are doing (hell the owner of it was previous Napster guy :/) but hopefully someone will sue 'em.

It does not offer a download link, but rather says if you have paid, or purchased a pc with it, you can have the source. So, even the source isnt being freely distributed. Weird, huh? Seems odd that someone has not made the source available so someone can recompile it and give it away, though, no? Im guessing that the Linux crowd does not care for Lindows at all, so let Lindows sell it with support, hopefully these people will want a more powerful Linux later and come to Red Hat or Mandrake, etc... Look at all the people who bough Windows 2000 over 98 and ME just for the features, I think it could be similar.

Im not sure of the rules, I was more concerned with allowing pirating. InYearsToCome, I hope you didnt think I was being harsh, I do now see where the confusion is. Bah, go Get Mandrake or Red Hat for free, let us know how you make out.

Thanks MA, no harm taken, it was my fault in the original wording of the thread (Already been edited) to make it seem like i was trying to get "warez"

Thank you all for anwering my questions, I was just fed up with my brothers GeForce2Ti and its incompatibility, and hearing lindows claim of similarity with windows, i figured it might be worth a try for him...

I see now that its not too smart, so thanks, you guys are great

Yeah, any linux will work for that video card (I believe, not sure if 2.4.20 supports it but it probably does, and if not, 2.5.* isn't that bad :))

Hi, I am not up with linux etc but is it worth installing a new OS in the hope that a game might play better on it.

I would presume the game was programmed with windows in mind so if there is trouble with it in that OS would not there be more trouble elsewhere. Peace Mal

if it's not made by loki or specially made for linux hoping on WINE or WINEX to make the game work is like dreaming for flying pigs :D. If it works bad under windows and was made for windows well it's not gonna work any better in UNIX.

where did all this talk about a game come from? Did i miss a reply somewhere mentioning a game?

All i ever mentioned was a driver comflict between the GeForce2Ti and winXP, that would most likely be resolved in a linux environment. anyway, I just got a copy of Mandrake 9.0 I am going to install on my brothers system so we'll see how things go...

Most topics, not all, are usually good for a page, maybe page and a half, then we wander all over ;) Ill tell you, been running Red Hat and Mandrake and I am screwed, neither wants to acknowledge my Nforce networking making internet non functional even after installing drivers. It wants to use the 3com (Nforce Deluxe board has dual networking) I am holding off for a final build from Red Hat. I just got done tinkering with the beta of Mandrake released today and it crashed on install, so that was that ;) Given the choice, ill bet you all your hardware will be recognized by Red Hat or MAndrakes latest non beta releases. From what I saw they all support GeForce to the 4 series out of the box. Mandrakes latest build also refused to setup my GeForce 4 properly, thats why I mention the latest official builds, I think its 8.0 for RedHat and 9.0 for Mandrake....

    Good luck with it!

Look like there is only a closed source nForce network driver available. I am afraid, this driver will be never included in any Linux distro :(

Maybe you find a solution here:
    http://www.nforcershq.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=29

Yes, but 2D only. For 3D (OpenGL) you need to install this: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191

HI, The game was my fault. You mentioned the incompatability of your brother's video card and I imagined games. Sorry. Peace Mal

May consider a new motherboard. Linux isnt a big deal, but now my Dazzle card does not work. I went through everything, finally called tech support and answered her questions before she could ask, so i tried it all. I noticed certain problems, while fixable on their support forums with VIA, but I cant help but wonder if it does not come back to the board. Its just not "out there" like VIA or Intel and I am starting to think it may give me more problems in the long run... Just a guess....
