linking two PC's

i want to link two PC's togather to transfer files and such from one to the other. what sort of cables do i need and how do i go about it?

im still not sure what sort of cross over cable i need.

Looks like a standard ethernet cable but the wiring in the connectors is different on each end as opposed to being the same on each end for a standard cable.

If it's a premade cable, it should have crossover marked on the insulation along with the other specs.
You could try a straight cable. Some NICs can do the change over internally.

 

i haven't got the cable yet, i just want to make sure i buy the right one for the job:confused

 

If you're going to buy one, it will be specified on the packaging.

Generally the yellow ones (as shown in your thumbnail) are crossover cables
and the green ones are patch (straight-through cables)

As LBMEST mentioned it should be written on the cable itself as well as the packaging, newer nics may have internal crossover capabilities so a patch cable may suffice.

Personally I am using a 'Cat6 Network Cable 3m' and a 'Cross Over Network Adapter'
