I recently purchased a Linksys BEFSR41 Etherfast Cable/DSL Router in the hope of sharing my SBC or AT&T DSL connection. I have my DSL connected to a WinXP PC and functioning properly.

I have a total of 4 pc's on my LAN. All four connect through a regular 10/100 switch and all belong to the same workgroup. I have to assign IP addresses to all 4 pc's within the workgroup. (192.168.1.1XX) The subnet is 255.255.255.0 on all as well. The gateway is set 192.168.1.1 on all PC's. The other three PC's are running Windows 98SE.

All PC's on the network use to access the internet through ICS and a dial-up service. Slow as molasses. Finally stepped into the new millenium and signed up for DSL. The XP PC managed the internet connection.

I can connect to the internet, on the XP PC, if I set my network connection to Obtain IP Autonmatically. However, I cannot set my PC to obtain IP automatically due to an application on the network. I can get either the internet working on my XP PC but not my LAN or I can get my LAN working through the router but not the internet.

I have upgraded the firmware in the router. I have reset the router several times. How can I set a static IP address on my PC and share the internet with all four 98 PC's.

Power off all devices including your cable/dsl modem. Connect all of your PC's to the router ports 1-4. Connect your Cable/DSL modem to the WAN port of your router. Then power on in this order. Power on the DSL modem first and wait 35 seconds. Power on the LinkSys router next and wait 35 seconds. Then power on your PC's. You should be good to go as TimW eluded to.

    OH yeah.....sell your switch.

    Thanks for all the help!

Here is an update on my router dilema.

I have uninstalled ALL the software provided by AT&T for my DSL modem,
including the Broadjump Client. I am able to connect to the internet with my PC's static IP address set and the gateway as the router. I have programmed my router for a PPPoE ISP connection and changed the password on the router. After powering everything up in the order prescribed, I can connect to the internet.

Here's where the fun begins. I have NO other PC's within my LAN connected to the router. After a few minutes after startup, the "Internet" light on my XP PC begins to flash non stop. I can still access the internet. However, a few minutes later the "Internet" light stops flashing and the "Power" light begins to flash. I am no longer able to connect to the internet. Any clues?

I have also scanned my XP PC for spyware via the procedure layed out by Major Attitude. I have also used Bitdefender on-line scanner to indentify any virus'. My PC is clean.

I am getting ready to reset my router and try one more time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Weird! I have seven of these routers in our office, and I have never had a problem with them. I even managed to get one working strictly as a switch! You can find all the router's documentation at this link, but I would check with your ISP to make sure that there isn't any inactivity timeout settings.
