    Hello, I'm having a bit of trouble with my router.

    The router/modem/gateway in question is this:

    http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?QuickLinx=3QYJ

    I couldn't find it on Linksys site - but you get the idea, hopefully. Anyway, what is the trouble?

    Well, I set it up and I could actually use my browser, which I was very surprised about, considering my inexperience. However, it was only until I expanded things in regards to the internet, that I noticied there was a problem.

    Some websites fail to load - for example MySpace and MSN.com don't load in any browser (tried Opera, Firefox & IE) - yet some other sites work and load fine. I also noticied a problem when I went to play Halo online, when I went to get the list of servers available - nothing was doing.

    Another problem I was having - was that Windows messenger was working, but MSN messenger wasn't.

    I understand that Halo & MSN messenger are most likely port problems, in need of being allowed to work with the programs - but as for the random websites not working, I have no idea.

    Anyway, I recently formatted my computer and set the network up again. I didn't expect this to change anything, of course - but I formatted the computer anyway, as I wanted to get rid of a clutter of stuff that I wasn't using.

    I then set up a Static IP through the instructions provided on another site which deals with Ports & all of that - which worked well. However, the problem I am having (took a while to get there, I know) is that when I enter the router address, it asks for a Username & Password. (as expected)

    I understand that you specify a password for your network, in order to stop outsiders getting a free trip on your internet - but I don't ever recall entering a username for the network - the only username I used was for the ISP access and I even tried those - which obviously didn't work.

    I'm pretty much stumped in regards to what I'm meant to do, I've entered the default 'admin' details as suggested by Linksys help database, but nothing is doing - it just keeps asking me for the log in details...which I can't provide.

    Any help in regards to any of the problems would be appreciated - as I've pretty much tried everything I know, although that isn't a lot.

    Thanks for any help.

    Hey HarleyK,
    Here's a link to your router and there is a user guide link on the page -

    http://www-uk.linksys.com/servlet/S...940633&pagename=Linksys/Common/VisitorWrapper

    Here's a procedure for resetting your password info that comes from the trouble shooting section -

    9. I forgot my password, or the password prompt always appears when I am saving settings to the
    Gateway.
    • Reset the Gateway to factory default by pressing the Reset button for 10 seconds and then releasing it. If
    you are still getting prompted for a password when saving settings, then perform the following steps:
    1. Access the Gateway’s web-based utility by going to http://192.168.1.1 or the IP address of the
    Gateway. Enter the default username and password admin, and click the Administrations =>
    Management tab.
    2. Enter a different password in the Gateway Password field, and enter the same password in the
    second field to confirm the password.
    3. Click the Save Settings button.

    If you do reset your router you will need your ISP info to reset your connection.
    Hope that helps.:)

    Cheers for the help, LB - Very much appreciated.

    Most of the Linksys help topics said to hold the reset button for 5 seconds and it would reset - but in reality you have to hold it for about 14 seconds in order to get a proper on and off reset.

    I did manage to get into the settings of the router - and got round to allowing ports for MSN Messenger & Halo - However, still getting no joy. Although my firewall is at least detecting that the programs are looking to join in Internet activity - where as I got nothing last time round.

    I've given the programs full access but they're still not doing the business. MSN tries to log in, but then gives off a failed log in error - I ran a troubleshoot and everything was ticked: bar, 'IE's Offline Setting' and 'Wireless' - but I don't use IE and my connection isn't wireless - although it is a wireless-capable gateway.

    I'm really running out of ideas. Unless I've been given the completely wrong ports for the programs - but I've used Port Forward who were recommended to me by Linksys. I'm still confused as to why some websites don't load up either - when they will load perfectly fine in my AOL browser - but I was hoping that I wouldn't have to use that after getting the gateway.

    Hello LB,

    Unfortunately I cannot get onto that site, due to the router's randomness.

    The error I get is: 80048820

    [IMG]

    There is no firewall holding it back, the thing has full access. *confused*

    I'm gonna try and contact Linksys again - they pawned me off very quickly to the other place so I'll try and annoy them for a while longer.

    Here's a listing of their troubleshooting steps. You've probably done most, but I'll give you the whole list anyway.

    Error 80048820: You cannot sign in to Windows Live Messenger

    Check your Internet connection
    Try visiting a website such as www.hotmail.com. If you can't connect to a website, contact your ISP or your local network administrator.

    Verify that your firewall is not blocking Windows Live Messenger
    To determine if Messenger is blocked by a firewall, visit the MSN Web Messenger website and sign in to MSN Web Messenger there. If you can use this site to sign into Messenger, Messenger may be blocked by a firewall.

    To enable Messenger to work with most common firewalls, visit the Messenger known issues website and follow the instructions in the "Cannot sign into Messenger when you have a firewall running on your computer" section.

    Check the date and time settings on your computer
    1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
    2. Type control timedate.cpl, and then press ENTER.
    3. In the Date and Time Properties dialog box, verify that the date and time settings on your computer are correct, and then click OK.

    Check your Microsoft Internet Explorer proxy settings
    If you can't connect to the Internet, verify that your proxy settings in Internet Explorer are correct. You may have to contact your ISP or network administrator to find out the correct settings. To clear your proxy settings in Internet Explorer, follow these steps:

    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
    3. On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
    4. Clear the Automatically detect settings check box.
    5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

    Clear your Messenger proxy settings
    1. Start Messenger.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Options.
    3. Click Connection, and then click Advanced Settings.
    4. Delete the entries under SOCKS.
    5. Click OK, and then click OK again.

    Verify your Internet Explorer security settings
    1. Start Internet Explorer.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options, and then click the Advanced tab.
    3. In the Security section, make sure the Check for server certificate revocation check box is cleared.
    4. In the Security section, make sure the Use SSL 2.0 and the Use SSL 3.0 check boxes are selected.
    5. Click OK.

    Reregister the SSL security libraries
    1. On the taskbar, click Start, and then click Run.
    2.
    Type each of the following commands in the Open box, and then press ENTER. After each command is executed successfully, you will receive a "DllRegisterServer succeeded" message. Wait until you receive this message before continuing to the next command.
    * REGSVR32 softpub.dll
    * REGSVR32 wintrust.dll
    * REGSVR32 initpki.dll
    * REGSVR32 Rsaenh.dll
    * REGSVR32 Mssip32.dll
    * REGSVR32 Cryptdlg.dll
    * REGSVR32 Dssenh.dll
    * REGSVR32 Gpkcsp.dll
    * REGSVR32 Slbcsp.dll
    * REGSVR32 Sccbase.dll

    Check the .NET Messenger Service
    The .NET Messenger Service may be temporarily unavailable. Wait several minutes, and then try to sign in again. Or, visit Messenger Service Status to find out the status of the server.

    That's about it for me. Hope that gets your problem solved HarleyK.
    If anyone else has any ideas, step right in.

    Cheers once again for your help, LB. Appreciate your effort to look it up.

    I decided to contact Linksys earlier today and see what they had to say, if they had of given me the same advice I would have given the above (or below depending on these boards sometimes, never figured out how or why it does that, but y'know)...turns out I had to change the 'MTU' settings of my router - once I did that everything worked again, so very pleased.
