hey guys. i have finally gotten the laptop that i have been trying to get forever and i also got a linksys 5 switch router. i ran my modem into the uplink slot and my laptop to the #1 slot, and all the lights lit up showing everything was fine and that data was being transfered. well the laptop can't find the internet. do i need to create a new network connection for that? i also want to run a desktop off of it so what is the process i need to go through to make it work and share the connection and files? thanks in advance for any help. it is greatly appreciated.

Did you follow the instructions that came with your router for your particular type of internet service (cablemodem) as far as any settings that need to be made to your computer's Local Area Connection properties?

You are currently connecting the laptop to the router by an ethernet cable or a wireless card?

i am currently by passing the router becuase it will not put the connection through to my laptop. so i have the modem connected directly to the modem via ethernet. i want to get the router to work so i can run my 2 desktops and my laptop off of my cable connection. and money is a issue so i am trying to make this one work.

Does your router documentation tell you what its IP address is?

thats the thing. i don't have the documentation. my uncle gave me this router and he didn't give me any paper work. anyway i can find it without the papers?

How did you follow the instructions if you have no documentation?

    What's the model number?

All you probably needed to do was use a paper clip to reset the router to factory defaults (to get rid of any settings potentially incompatible with your ISP), and downlaod the docs from the manufacturer's website.

Type 192.168.1.1 into Internet explorer and the password should be ADMIN after you reset the router to defaults.

It should bring you to a menu of a type and you can configure everything you want.

Set IP address to automatic and it should work.

Ps: take off any firewalls to see if that helps? :)
(Also you can go to Linksys webpage and Download the firmware for the router, run this and it might make it work again, My router has to run it every power out....)
