Ok i have a linux problem here. Im trying to get my Linksys wireless b usb network adaptor to work in redhat 9 and/or fedora 3. I guess you could say im a newbie of a sort. anyway. I have the development packs and what not installed. I am just clueless about how to install the tarballs and these other alternative ways i can go. (i.e. make config , etc) they talk about CVS which is where they totally lose me. I am willing to learn but have no idea where to turn...can someone PLEASE help me....? Thanks VERY much...

Its a 2.8 version of the adaptor.

I can't help other than to check out the linksys website if you haven't done that already.

Tarballs are awesome I haven't used my Linux in months and I miss it... When you use a tarball, Linux compiles the program according to your configuration. Think of it like this. While the program is installing, it is being asked "What CPU is on this box?" "Is it capable of dual processor support" whatever say 200 questions, the idea is that based on each of the answers the program will install tailored to your system. It's a beautiful thing. Once you get the hang of it. Some people just use RPMs and those prepackaged files, they're easier no doubt. But if it is tarball, open the folder the program came in and look for two files. One is called README and one is called INSTALL. One will have instructions how to install it. It is probably three easy steps something like, tar -xvzf, make, configure, I think I messed that part up it's been awhile but it's very easy. Depending on the program it may take 5-10 minutes nothing too bad. Linuxquestions.org rocks by the way, some very smart people on there. Hope this helps get you going. Don't worry about CVS I wouldn't think that's important. Again, read the README and INSTALL files. They have easy step-by-step instructions how to install the tarball.

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!! I dindt realize tar's could be all that cool (compared to rar/zip) I succeeded in the install but i came acros another kink. i did make config, make all BUT thats when it goes through this long a** list of things that i cant read (too fast) and at the end it says the following...(messed up order)
    first error i see...
    leaving directory /wlan/atmelwlandriver/src/apps/cmd_line
then it says wx-config: command not found
then it says hbhBit seems that the wxWindows library is not installed. wx-config, the scriprt providing information about wxWindows installation, is missing. Please refer to the readme.linux or visit xwindows.org for further information.
We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    Make[1]: *** [wxconfig] Error 255
    Make[1]: Leaving directory 'wlan/atmelwlandriver/src/apps/winter'
    Make[1]: ** [all] Error 1
then brings me back to the good ol [root@localhost] prompt

Sorry to be a pain in the royal a$$ but i really wanna get this workin... I along with much of society has been plagued by the windows GUI. It infects you and makes you dumb to all command line usage. I cant ever remember MSDOS which i could use so well, i could do it with no fingers!!! Anyway, about the pending crisis, its speakin linux geek speak as super noobs call it..and i get tottal fed up, go drink some water, watch tv for an hr., then come back and try again after i cool off. Thanks OODLES FOR THE HELP!

by the way Farbib, how do you change your subtitle on here (ex. yours is e-Phalice..) thanks, just wondering

Check and see if wx-config is located at /usr/local/bin, and if so, try adding /usr/local/bin to your PATH environment variable.

If this does not work, or you do not know how, my advice is to post the question on www.linuxquestions.org. No need to change the phrasing of your question much. It contains all the details and is short. Just be polite like you were here, and don't say anything stupid. Add in the question something like "I'd really like to use Linux for the first time and am having trouble with my wireless card, I am almost there after a lot of hard work and could use somebody to help me get over the hump." Linux users will relate to that and help you do so. Good luck. When you fix it, please post how you did it. Good luck!

I read in the Major Geeks documentation somewhere the nickname part is changed by the mods as a reward for good work (the exact formula was undetermined AFIAK), or the mods change it if it's funny. My case was probably the latter! One day I made a joke referring to the size of my e-phalice, and a mod made it my nickname.

Now go post this question on Linuxquestions, get that wifi card working, and have fun seeing first hand the amazing amount of quality open source software. Also see if there are linux user groups in your area, known as lugs, where linux users gather and help each other and talk linux, they're great.

Ok i got it working and even was brave enough to format my noteboot and try fedora with my pc card wlan. Heres how i did it...if i did it, anyone can.:

Download this very awesome program called Ndis Wrapper. Unpack the tar anywhere-just remember where. Then do the make config or whatever it tells you to do in the readme. then ittl tell you how to put in your hex wep key and what not ( i opted to do that, I instead used the graphical tool that comes with Gnome/X) All in all, the longest part was putting in my wep key. ive never really written hex before but all i had to do is prefix my key with the 2 easy characters: "0x" Thank you so much farbib. I was really about to give up for good and never look back. Now i have wlan and some music/video players and all the good junk from windows, with the security and whatnot of linux! Just like the Ditech commercial. "lost another one to Fedora...." ...that fell on its face...Either way, im the happiest person the on the earth...

Edit: Please, PLEASE read the README before doing anything, that would have saved me a whole lotta time and frustration. If/when your kernel panics, you'll wish you did.
