Here's the deal. My aunt has been having trouble connecting to the internet every once and a while. When I lived with her, I bought a Linksys WRT54G (I believe. I can't verify yet) and set it up to work with her existing Verizon DSL account. And when I lived there, we experienced little to no problems. After moving out, I left that router there for her to use, since she has a laptop as well as a desk top. Ever since I have moved out, she has experienced problem upon problem. Now I would initially think this is user error, but she has no experience whatsoever with computers, and she doesn't even know how to access the firmware on the router.

I was over there yesterday, and I was noticing something strange. Before I did anything, I power cycled the router/modem and computers. That seemed to work, but then the connection went dead on me. I went to the desktop, which is wired to the router, and checked out the configs on the router. Everything seemed fine. I then pulled up the network connections from windows. On there, there is the LAN and a Internet Gateway (for the router, I assume). I noticed that the Gateway was disconnected. So I connected it. The internet worked for about a minute then went down again.

So I go back into the linksys, and looked at the status tab. I notice that it is not connected to the internet. I go to connect it and it takes a bit, but finally connects. With the Network connections window still open, I watch the gateway go from connected, to disabled, to disappearing, to connected again. Once it goes to connected, the linksys status page says that it is now disconnected from the internet.

Everytime I connected one, the other would disconnect. I was getting very frustrated to say the least  . I even tried to reset the router and re-do everything. This would work for about a minute.

One more note, nothing on the router has changed (unless I changed it) since I moved out. Plus, I'm almost 100% certain that no-one could access the router because of the security precautions I used when setting it up in the first place.

Any ideas of what to do. If any info is needed pertaining to the router, I probably won't be able to answer till I get in front of the router tonight. Thanks in advance!

Plug the desktop directly into the modem ....see if it is ok ....could be the router is going bye-bye.

I have thought of that, and I haven't been able to try it yet. When I did get a hold of tech support for verizon (our DSL ISP), they said that their seems to be a higher than normal resistance on the line to the modem. What may cause this?

Assume you have filters on your phone line ....and if so, then would suspect that the router is going out .....may have had an electrical surge try to pass through it.

If they are measuring higher than normal resistance, it can be a bad wire, bad coupling etc. If they say there is an issue with the line, they should come out and fix it. That, is probably your problem.

I don't think so, but then again, we have been getting more than normal amounts of rain here in boston, so yea, this might have been happening when there was rain... why do you ask?
