    Hi

I have a Linksys wrt54g router , have had it for 2 years ans never used it. No tech support is available from cisco due to age of it.

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit desk top, and i would like to set this up to use a Toshiba satellite windows 7 64 bit laptop in my home.

Can you direct me to a proper tutorial to do this or instructions you might have?

    thanks in advance

At one point there was a "firware update" listed on linksys, will the router find that
when i hopefully get connected ?

    thanks again

If there is the situation that after i type in the numbers in the browser, should i not be able to connect, i just unhook all and unplug the modem again and rehook to the desk top? I have been using the laptop back and forth now by just unplugging the modem and reconnecting each pc individually. I do usually have to unplug the modem, so the router will work the same once i typE in the numbers in the browser? Tomorrow i'll try it , not tonight.

Thanks again for your prompt responses, never did this before.

    No more questions tonight.

If and when i get this up and running, is my laptop going to connect automatically
or do i have to go in to control panel networking and do something?

    never done this before
    thanks again

I have not called the cable company, but i do not have a log on that i use when i boot up, is that something i need being router is now to be in the middle? I have a account name and password but are they what we are talking about?

    I will attempt this tomorrow.

    your quotes below

You access the router setup at the browser interface.

Everything should be smooth in connection by using the router default configuration.

The only thing you should need to setup manually is your wireless security.

Remember that all settings need to be identical for both the router and connected clients ie SSID, Workgroup etc.

This should give you a rundown on setup for your Wireless home network.
    -----------------------------
In Vista, right click your computer icon in the system tray and select 'connect to a network'.

You should see a network with the SSID 'Linksys' (Unless you have changed the SSID name in the router configuration page)

Click connect and your done. (Check the box 'automatically connect' when network in range).

Now you will need to go back into the router configuration and secure your wireless network with either WEP, WPA or WPA2. (Recommend WPA2).
During security setup you will be asked to enter a password for your network key!

After you save and exit router setup, you will notice that you have been disconnected from the network.
Repeat the above steps for reconnection again, only this time you will be prompted to enter your network password for connection.
