Linux and gaming?

I have heard that there are plenty of freeware games for Linux, but is there any kind of support for the major games? I know that this is being hopeful, but I had to ask before deciding to switch over to Linux completely.

If this isn't possible, maybe I will just run Linux on a separate machine for internet purposes, and run a machine with XP for gaming.

    Thanks in advance.

If you don't mind paying for it, Cedega will allow you to play a lot of major games. UT2004 will run on Linux out of the box. Quite a few modern games will run under Cedega - BUT it might take a bit more work than it would on Windows.
