Question, I had a computer in front of me yesterday that wouldm't boot to anything, tried All the options. It was a Dell Dimension 2400, the utility diagnostics showed no problems. The blue screens indicated a failure to load because of potential viruses.

If I were to boot this from a Linux bootable CD, can I run and possibly remediate the virus scans from the malware forum? Will they be effective even though I wouldn't be running the XP OS?

I don't think you would have a way of running a windows anti-virus program from within linux. Windows programs won't work in linux. The only one I know that might run in Clam. Whether the linux version will scan a windows part of the hard drive is unknown.
There are some CDs you can boot from and scan when a computer won't boot.

Here's a list of some of them

That is one hell of a useful link, Powerage86 :cool :major

Although I am not a Linux user, there are lots of other useful info as you scroll through the link that I bookmarked for future reference.

    Thanks again,

what you need to do is load that Linux CD, install it over the windows partition, and never look back.... I suggest Ubuntu. But for real, if you are having blue screens are you sure its not just a bad hard drive? If you know the drive is fine then it might just be best to format it and reinstall windows, doesn't sound like you'll be able to run a virus scan if you cant get windows to boot.

Sooo, can I boot from a Linux CD, that I already have made, and run programs like malwarebytes?

As long as the programs are already installed on the CD or you have internet access, yes. Personally I would still recommend a customised distro with the program built in. There are plenty of free ones out on the web.

What if I run these programs from a flash drive?

Can you please explain :) How can one get MBAM etc to scan from a live CD/distro. From your response to brandy's- post #9.
    I'm going with plodr's solution.

I was merely supporting plodr's idea as I was recommending the distros with the antivirus built in.

Further to that, I was under the impression that if you slipstreamed MBAM or ClamAV into a normal distro like ubuntu you could run them from the CD and scan from there. Maybe this assumption is incorrect.
