    Hi,
I have installed Ubuntu on my main PC(high spec). On this PC I have a dual boot with Windows XP Pro.

    I have an old PC:
    256MB Ram
    60GB HDD

I got rid of Windows Home on this PC. I installed Xubuntu. While I am delighted with Ubuntu I am not convinced about Xubuntu. What are your views on the best Linux distro for my old low spec PC? I want to change from Xubuntu to another distro on this old PC. I have heard good things about

    Parsix
    Pardus
    Granular
    Blag
    wolvix

would any of these be good for my old PC?

    Any input appreciated. Thanks.

    What is the speed?

For a long time, I ran Ubuntu on a laptop with a 1.7GHz P4 CPU, 256MB, and a 30GB hard drive. It worked just fine, though it did start running smoother with I upgraded to 512MB of RAM.

Vector Linux will work with 256MB RAM but I need to know the speed so I can find the proper version.
I ran Vector on an old HP desktop 533MHz, on a 10GB hard drive I installed that was a spare pulled from another computer.

Yeah, Vector is good for older PC's, although the default XFCE desktop is not to everyones taste. There is a SOHO edition that comes with KDE though

Blag is good too, both are install only btw. Blag is definitely the easier (install) for beginners though

I find old pcs in yard sale good sources for RAM and disk. Many times the owner will allow you to fire up the system, or they even have the specs posted on the outside. In California, it costs $12 to discard a system, but that is cheap for a memory stick and HD....... And if you go back at 230 or 300 PM they sometimes give them away!

Sorry to hijack this thread...but it is alone the line of using Linux on an old PC.

I've been thinking of installing Linux on an old PC...dual PIII 800mhz CPUs with SCSI hard drives, CD reader and burner, etc. My question is: Do I have to do anything special in order for Ubuntu to recognize the SCSI hardware and dual processors?

    Thank you for any leads/information.

You can try it live and see how the distro finds everything.

    Mandriva
    Knoppix
    Ubuntu
    - Mepis
    - Mint

Any flavor and I have it running on a P3 933. Mind you single processor, but it should work for you. Post back what you find.

Go here to download some live distros
    http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
I would also add PCLinux to the list BoredOutOfMyMind posted.
Burn the ISOs, fire up the live CD and see if it likes your hardware. If it doesn't, try another. Keep going until you find one that likes your hardware.
If you have trouble with all of them, come back for help.

see post #9 above. The hardware decides the distro - you don't.
While everyone sings the praises of ubuntu, it will not install on a computer I wanted it on. So it might be popular but if it doesn't work for you, then you look for something else.
