My monitor on Linux supports 1280x1024 but on windows i can get 1600x1080. I am thinking this is a driver issue. The card is a nVidia GeForce 7600GT. Thanks for your help.

    What distro?

This is a simple xorg.conf issue, most likely.

Well, being that its an Nvidia card, the first thing I would do is install the non-free driver. If that doesnt do it for ya, feel welcome to use my personal xorg.conf, which should work fine for you, or look at how its written to edit your own, and add resolutions. Mine works at 1680x1050.
